 Tuberculosis is an extremely infectious disease caused by
Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

It’s one of the top-10 causes of death worldwide.

it primarily affects the lungs, but in some case it can spread to

other parts of the body.

Introduction: When TB spreads, it’s referred to as extrapulmonary

tuberculosis

One form of EPTB is bone and joint tuberculosis

Bone tuberculosis is simply a form of TB that affects the spine,

the long bones, and the joints

Potts disease is tuberculosis of spine

 DEFINITION:
Pott disease is tuberculosis of the spine usually due to
haematogenous spread from other sites, often the lungs.
The lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae are the
areas of the spine most often affected.
Cause:
◦ Tuberculosis begins in the lungs when you inhale air that
contains Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
◦ This can develop into Pott's Disease if the infection spreads
from the lungs to the spine.
◦ the bacteria infects the joints of the spine, causing a form of
spinal arthritis.
 Fever

Weight loss

Symptoms: Back pain

Neurologic abnormalities (spinal cord compression with

paraplegia, paresis, impaired sensation, nerve root pain)

Stiffness in cervical spine

 Patient walks with short steps in order to avoid jerking the spine

In TB of cervical spine, the patient often supports his head with both hands under
the chin and twists his whole body in order to look sideways

Tb of cervical spine patient has a stiff, straight neck sometimes presence of

torticollis’

Clinical In dorsal spine TB, part of the spine becomes prominent (gibbus or kyphus)

examination
Tenderness can be elicited by pressing upon the side of spinous process.

Limited spinal movements presence of kyphosis

Presence of large, cold abscesses of paraspinal tissues

◦ Plain radiographs
◦ CT scan
◦ MRI
◦ Bonescan

the treatment goals in the medical management of tuberculosis of spine is to maintain spine stability ,
correct or prevent deformity and functional return to activities of daily living
treatment techniques in the management of tuberculosis of spine also includes spinal immobilization that
can be done by the means of orthosis . Some of them are as follows:
◦ Minerva jacket
◦ Collars
◦ thoraco lumbar spinal brace
Minerva jacket and
collars:
◦ Made up of thermoplastics
◦ Usually prescribed when cervical spine included
Thoracolumbosacral
Orthosis
◦ Made up of polyethylene
◦ provides moderate to firm thoracolumbosacral support
◦ Indicated for the cases of lumbar and thoracic spine
Taylor brace
◦ Provide immobilization and support
◦ made of aluminium and lined with padded felt and leather or
kydex depending on the brace you have been fitted with
