 Refractometer is a laboratory or field device for the
measurement of an index of refraction (refractometry).
What is The index of refraction is calculated from Snell's law while for
mixtures, the index of refraction can be calculated from the
refractometer ? composition of the material using several mixing rules such as
the Gladstone–Dale relation and Lorentz–Lorenz equation.
 There are four main types of refractometers:
1.traditional handheld refractometers
2. digital handheld refractometers
Types of 3. laboratory or Abbe refractometer
refractometer 4. inline process refractometers.

5.There is also the Rayleigh Refractometer used (typically) for

measuring the refractive indices of gases.
How to use
refractometer
1.
Connect the refractometer to the plug,
and turn the power on
2. 96%
water
Open the prism and rinse the prism with
water
3. 96%
alcohol
Rinse the prism again with alcohol
4.
Use the pippete to ad the liquid sample 96%
sample
to the prism, then, close the prism and
turn on the lamp
5.
Adjust the handwheel on the right side
until you see alight and dark region
6.
Use the bigger handwheel to place the
borderline exactly on the center of the
cross.
7.
Read the scale

After you have finished, clean the prism
with tissue and rinse the prism with
alcohol and water
