Pygmalion
Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in
love with a statue he had carved.
In time, Venus's festival day came,
and Pygmalion made offerings at
the altar of Aphrodite. There, too
scared to admit his desire, he
quietly wished for a bride who would
be "the living likeness of my ivory
girl." When he returned home,
Venus had granted Pygmalion's
wish.

Pygmalion married the ivory

sculpture which changed to a
woman under Venus's blessing. In
Ovid's narrative, they had a
daughter, Paphos, from whom the
city's name is derived.

Training and motivation

Inducing belief in employee about his ability to

succeed

Building self confidence

Example
Some rats ware distributed among 3 groups of students, and ware asked to carry out a task
using these rats

The first group of students ware told that the rats are smart and are self capable to come
out of the maze.

The second group of students ware told that these are ordinary rats who might have
trouble performing in the maze.

After few hours, when the experiment commenced, all the rats that ware given to second
group came out of the maze, while all the rates of the group one was still in the maze.

Because: As the second group ware told that they are just ordinary rats who might have
trouble these kind words ware enough for the students to show sympathy, warmth, and
encouragement towards their rodents, while students in group one neglected the rats that
were given to them.

Pygmalion Management
Your expectation of your subordinate dictates how you treat
them and ultimately, how they perform.

If you believe in your subordinate to be star performers, they

will become one.

 Else

If you believe that your subordinate are failure, then they will
become one.
9
Outcome
Self-efficiency is a persons belief in his of her ability to
perform the action necessary for success
The Pygmalion at work model suggest that having
high expectation of your employee makes you behave
towards them in a way that enhances their success
Managers must keep in mind that Pygmalion can cut
both ways. If you have low experience for your
employees, you may be inadvertently hurt their
performance by negatively impacting their
effectiveness.
