HEALTH AND SAFETY FACTORS

ASSOCIATED WITH COMPUTER

USE
Health and Safety
Occupational health and safety refers to guidelines
procedures and programmes that protect the safety,
welfare and health of
any person engaged
in work or employment.

When health and safety

procedures are followed
correctly, they can help
to prevent accidents and
reduce the risk of employee injury and illness.
Health Factors
Ergonomics
 This is the science of designing equipment
so that it is safe and easy to use.
Ergonomically designed furniture and
equipment reduce the risk of strain and
injury. An ergonomically correct product is
designed to work properly with the human
body.
Guidelines To Ensure Personal Health
 Use a properly designed computer desk with a
built-in tray to hold the keyboard and mouse
 Select a comfortable chair with adjustable
height, lower back support and if possible
adjustable armrests.
Guidelines To Ensure Personal Health
 Position monitors 24-30 inches (60-75 cm)
away from eyes or approximately arms
length from the body
 Look away from the screen and blink
eyes every few minutes to reduce
eyestrain
Guidelines To Ensure Personal Health
 Take frequent breaks away from the
computer
 Follow all instruction sheets and
regulations which govern the use of the
lab
Safety
Guidelines To Ensure Safety
 Do not overload electrical sockets

 Position System Units and Monitors carefully

on desks and tables to prevent accidental

damage and personal injury from falling units
Guidelines To Ensure Safety
 Ensure that the Lab is adequately lit
 Position all wires and extension cords so
that they do not run along walkways
 Report safety hazards and accidents in
the lab as soon as possible
Health Factors Which May Result From
Computer Use

 Eye strain
 Muscular strain
 Repeated Strain Injuries (RSI)
 Headaches
 Personal injury from Falling objects
 Personal injury from tripping over poorly
positioned wires and furniture
 Personal injury from faulty and poorly
designed furniture
