Woodlands – Biology

Grade 12 Biology
Course Outline

• Unit 1 – Biochemistry
• Unit 2 – Metabolic Processes
• Unit 3 – Molecular Genetics
• Unit 4 – Homeostasis
• Unit 5 – Population Dynamics
Expectations

• RESPECT – others, yourself

and the classroom.
• Be on time!
• Always be prepared with a pen,
ruler, eraser, pencil and paper.
• Have a positive attitude!
• Study!! Your next stop is First
Year Bio!!
Expectations
• What to expect
• Students from last semester
– 3-5x as much to memorize
– More writing in terms of labs
– Less assignments – meaning tests are worth more
– Less group assignments
– We are getting you ready for university
Rules
• All assignments and labs must be handed in on time – no exceptions
• One minute late – is still late
• Once an assignment is marked and handed back there will be no
chance to submit late work
• A missed test without a legitimate reason will result in a mark of
ZERO
• Same goes for quizzes, labs and assignments
• If you come late – do not be disruptive
• Dates of tests will be decided by the majority
• Food – No, unless you ask
• Phones – Out only during classwork time
• Bathroom breaks – Ask before you go
Keys to Success
• Do your homework…reading and questions most nights
• Study hard for tests
• Ask for help if needed
• Notes can be taken via pen or computer
– If you download the notes on your computer, you are still expected to
write down the coloured points
• Use D2L to keep yourself up to date
• Find me if you need help
– Usually here early
The Units
Unit 1 - Biochemistry
• Technological applications that affect biological processes
and cellular functions are used in the food, pharmaceutical,
and medical industries.
• Biological molecules and their chemical properties affect
cellular processes and biochemical reactions.
• Biochemical compounds play important structural and
functional roles in cells of all
living organisms.
Unit 2 - Metabolic Processes
• All metabolic processes
involve chemical changes
and energy conversions.
• An understanding of
metabolic processes
enables people to make
informed choices with
respect to a range of
personal, societal, and
environmental issues.
Unit 3 - Molecular Genetics
• DNA contains all the
genetic information for any
living organism.
• Proteins control a wide
variety of cellular
processes.
• Genetic research and
biotechnology have social,
legal, and ethical
implications.
Unit 4 - Homeostasis
• Organisms have strict
limits on the internal
conditions that they can
tolerate.
• Systems that maintain
homeostasis rely on
feedback mechanisms.
• Environmental factors can
affect homeostasis.
Unit 5 - Populations
• Population growth follows predictable patterns.
• The increased consumption of resources and production of
waste associated with population growth result in specific
stresses that affect Earth’s sustainability.
• Technological developments can contribute to or help offset
the ecological footprint associated with population growth
and the consumption of natural resources.
Other Notes
– Mr. Doret
– Calendar
– BYOD – bring your own laptops if at all possible.

– Ask Questions!
MARK BREAKDOWN
• Knowledge & Understanding - 25%
• Thinking & Investigation - 21%
• Communication – 10%
• Application - 14%

• Final Exam - 20%

Example Slide
• An enzyme’s function is affected by the binding of a regulatory
molecule at a different site than the active site.

• Allosteric regulation may either inhibit or stimulate an enzyme’s

activity.

• Usually the end product of a long series of reactions that make a

metabolic pathway inhibits an enzyme near the beginning of the
pathway.

• This way when the [product] is high the chemical reactions

leading to the product are slowed down.

tell me which unit you are looking most forward to.
a. Biochemistry
b. Metabolism
c. Genetics
d. Biology
e. Population Dynamics

2. Explain what your favourite subject is and why. Also explain your favourite project in that
course.

4. What do you enjoy doing outside school (sports, clubs etc)

5. Explain the reasons why you may be, or may not be looking forward to the upcoming
science course
