Range of Motion

Definition

• Range of Motion (ROM) : the


measurement of movement around
specific joint or body part
• Active ROM means you move a joint
through its range of motion

• Passive ROM involves someone else


moving a joint for you

Imperative Sentences

• We use the imperative (infinitive


without to) to tell somebody to
do something or give them
instructions.
• For example:
• Lift your leg
• Bend your arm
• Push the chair
• Rotate your arm

• In bed, slowly push your
foot up and down.
Repeat several times a
day. You can do this
exercise immediately
after surgery.

time in each direction,

• N : Morning, Mr. Charles. Are you ready to


exercise session this morning?
• C : I’m little tired this morning but I’ll try
• N : Good to hear that. We’re going to try
some exercises today to help you walk.
• C : Okay
• N : Now, In bed, slowly push your foot up and
down. Repeat several times a day
• C : It hurts
• N : That’s okay. Then keep your heel on the
bed and bend your knee. Then straighten
your leg again. Now, repeat that five times.
Let’s count together, One, two, three, that’s
very good. Well done. How do you feel?
• C : Not so bad. Its tough at first but I can
feel I’m better now.

• Patient conscious but tired, with nausea (pain
medication), left shoulder bruising and swelling
• ROM limited to100 degree with great discomfort
• Left leg immobilized, other joints fully mobile
• Health status prior to accident excellent, patient
unwilling to perform ROM

• Begin with passive ROM two times a day for two days
• Teach patient to perform active ROM three times a day
