FABRICATION OF

AUTOMATIC PNEUMATIC
SISSOR LIFT
ABSTRACT
This project work titled “AUTOMATIC PNEUMATIC SISSOR LIFT” has
been conceived having studied the difficulty in lifting the any type of light
vehicles. Our survey in the regard in several automobile garages, revealed the
facts that mostly some difficult methods were adopted in lifting the vehicles for
reconditioning.
Now the project has mainly concentrated on this difficulty, and hence a
suitable arrangement has been designed. Such that the vehicles can be lifted from
the floor land without application of any impact force. By pressing the button, the
solenoid valve activated. The compressed air is goes to the pneumatic cylinder
through solenoid valve. The ram of the pneumatic cylinder is act as a jack. The
automobile engine drive is coupled to the compressor engine, so that it stores the
compressed air when the vehicle running. This compressed air is used to activate
the pneumatic cylinder, when the button is activated.
INTRODUCTION
This device the automatic pneumatic jack for light vehicle garages
has been developed to later the needs of small and medium automobile
garages. In most of the garages the vehicles are lifted by using screw
jack. This needs high man power and skilled labors. In order to avoid
all such disadvantages, this automatic pneumatic Jack has been
designed in such a way that it can be used to lift the vehicle very
smoothly without any impact force. The operation is made be simple
that even any person can handled, by just pressing the button.
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Vehicle Mounted Pneumatic Jack By: Faizan Nasir June 5, 2009 Advisor:
Prof. Ahmad Elgafy
There are many safety hazards posed with manually raising a vehicle to change a
tire. Standard car jacks pose a great safety hazard due to the physical and time
consuming involvement of the operator. Aftermarket automatic hydraulic jacks
though safer still are hazardous as they have to be manually placed under the
vehicle and have limited use. A pneumatic car jack that is permanently attached to
the underbody of a vehicle will reduce and eliminate many of these safety issues. A
customer survey of approximately equal number of male and female drivers was
conducted. According to the customer survey, safety, reliability and durability are
the most important factors for customers when considering a vehicle jack product.
The same customers are least satisfied with accessibility of controls, speed of
operation and ease of operation of their current vehicle jack system. The results of
the QFD matrix show that ease of operation, accessibility of controls and energy
efficiency have the highest relative weights.

Hydraulic jacks are typically used for shop work, rather than as an
emergency jack to be carried with the vehicle. Use of jacks not designed for
a specific vehicle requires more than the usual care in selecting ground
conditions, the jacking point on the vehicle, and to ensure stability when the
jack is extended. Hydraulic jacks are often used to lift elevators in low and
medium rise buildings.
• A hydraulic jack uses a fluid, which is incompressible, that is forced into a
cylinder by a pump plunger. Oil is used since it is self lubricating and stable.
When the plunger pulls back, it draws oil out of the reservoir through a suction
check valve into the pump chamber. When the plunger moves forward, it
pushes the oil through a discharge check valve into the cylinder. The suction
valve ball is within the chamber and opens with each draw of the plunger. The
discharge valve ball is outside the chamber and opens when the oil is pushed
into the cylinder. At this point the suction ball within the chamber is forced
shut and oil pressure builds in the cylinder.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• The compressed air from the compressor reaches the solenoid valve. The
solenoid valve changes the direction of flow according to the signals
from the timing device.
• The compressed air pass through the 5/2 solenoid valve-1 and it is
admitted into the front end of the cylinder block. The air pushes the
piston for the work piece clamping. At the end of the stroke air from the
solenoid valve reaches the rear end of the cylinder block. The pressure
remains the same but the area is less due to the presence of piston rod.
This exerts greater pressure on the piston, pushing it at a faster rate thus
enabling faster return stroke.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• The compressed air pass through the 5/2 solenoid valve-2 and it is
admitted into the front end of the cylinder block. The air pushes the
piston, so that the work piece is lifted. At the end of the lifting stroke
air from the solenoid valve reaches the rear end of the cylinder block.
• The stroke length of the piston can be changed by making suitable
adjustment in the timer.

PNEUMATIC CYLINDER DESIGN
Design of Piston rod:
Load due to air Pressure.

Diameter of the Piston (d) = 40 mm
Pressure acting (p) = 6 kgf/cm²
= 6 ×0.981
= 5.886 bar= 0.5886N/mm2
Material used for rod = C 45
(data book page no 1.12 )
Yield stress (σy)= 36 kgf/mm²
= 36×98.1
= 3531.6 bar
= 353.16N/mm2
factor of safety = 2( data book page.no 8.19)
Force acting on the rod (F) = Pressure x Area
= p x (Πd² / 4)
= 0.5886 x {( Π x 40² ) / 4 }
F = 739.6 N

Design Stress(σy) = σy / F0 S
= 353.16 / 2 = 176.5N/mm2
∴d = √4F/π [σy]
= √ (4×739.6)/ π[176.5]
∴ Minimum diameter of rod required for the load = 2.3 mm
We assume diameter of the rod = 15 mm
Length of piston rod:
Approach stroke = 160 mm
Length of threads = 2 x 20= 40mm
Extra length due to front cover = 12 mm
Extra length of accommodate head = 20 mm
Total length of the piston rod =160 + 40 + 12 + 20
= 232 mm
By standardizing, length of the piston rod = 230 mm
DESIGN OF BALL BEARING
Bearing No. 6202 (Data book page.no 4.13)
Outer Diameter of Bearing (D) = 35 mm
Thickness of Bearing (B) = 12 mm
Inner Diameter of the Bearing (d) = 15 mm
r₁ = Corner radii on shaft and housing
r₁ = 1(From design data book)
Maximum Speed = 14,000 rpm (From design data book)
Mean Diameter (dm)= (D + d) / 2
=(35 + 15) / 2
dm = 25 mm
CONCLUSION
• The present invention is a vehicle screw jack jack positioned on a each side
between the front and rear wheels with an electric dc geared motor drive
arrangement for the operation of lifting and descending of the vehicle to its
position for operation. The jack has gear configured for a low speed of
operation. Switches and are used to control the direction of movement of the
jack. Releasing the switches during operation stops the jack in the present
position. This invention relates to a jacking arrangement for automobiles
whereby a lifting jack is secured on the lower part of the chassis of a vehicle.
The jack has a screw jacks configuration with a a low speed geared motor
motor .The extension of the jack is limited by a switch handle which is
configured for cutting off the current flow as the switch is closed by the action
of a power screw approximately reaching a maximum extension position..
• Simultaneously, a switch handle is depressed changing the polarity of the
current flow through the motor thereby positioning the motor for the
retraction of the jack. At the instant prior to the jack reaching a maximum
retracted position, polarity switch handle is depressed again reversing the
polarity of the motor. In-place vehicle jack assemblies of the pivoted
lever type configured for being permanently mounted at the front and
rear of the vehicle frame structure are described. Each of the jack
assemblies comprises a unitary device which is independently operable
by an electrical motor, and independently selectively controlled at the
jack or remotely from the control compartment of the vehicle
