Leadership Vs
Management
Managers enforce, check,
threaten etc.
Leaders inspire.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Classic “Characteristics” of Leaders

• Winning too much

• Adding too much value
• “I already knew that”
• Not “letting go”
• Passing too much judgement

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

What percentage of all interpersonal
communication is spent on…
• People talking about how smart,
special, wonderful they are (or
listening to someone else do this).

• People talking about how stupid,

inept or bad someone else is (or
listening to someone else do this).

The Ozzy Story

Goldsmith Leadership Tools
• Feedforward
• Letting go of the past
• Listening to suggestions without judging.
• Learning as much as you can.
• Helping as much as you can.
• Learning points to help you be a great leader.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Feed Forward Exercise

• Ask
• Listen
• Think
• Thank

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

For the Future…
• Ask
• Listen
• Think You’ve done this today
• Thank

• Respond
• Involve Do later with your “Coach”
• Change
• Follow Up
Ask & Listen
The first thing that we want to do is the last
thing that we should do.
Stop:
• Asking for input – then expressing my
opinion.
• Making excuses.

Classic challenges for small business leaders.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Think

Avoid speaking when angry or out

of control.

Hard at work and even harder at

home.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Thank

Avoid punishing the messenger…

• The correcting my driving case study.

• Why do we punish people who are
trying to help?

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Respond
Responding to 360 Feedback:
• Positive
• Simple
• Focused
• Fast
Ask for ideas for the future – not more feedback
from the past.
Promise to listen and think – not to do
everything that people suggest.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Involve

Keys to successful behavioural change:

• Set a clear goal.
• Write down the goal.
• Publicly state the goal.
• Involve a support group in helping you
achieve the goal.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Change

• A great question.
• Can people change? Definitely.
• Will people change? Maybe.
• 14 years of Action Coaching… my observation
yes, but for below the line people – 1 in 4
chance.

Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach

Follow Up

• The key to making change last.

• Frequency is more important than
duration.
• Sticking with it.
• Daily Questions… Routine because we
are all excellent planners and poorer
doers
Mark Daniels, ActionCOACH Business Coach
Recap

• Set SMART Goals... Only 1 hour. Break down to

steps – 90 days and 30 days.
• Go Zone, Slow Zone, No Zone… keeps your body
chemicals in balance for maximum performance.
• Leadership… less about you and more listening…
work on your self. Give feedforward as well as
feedback.
