 Intended Purpose of the Job Description type.
 Environmental condition.
 Number of workers.
 Duration of work.
 Rescue and backup Arrangement.

KARAM
FALL ARREST PROCESS
 Fall Arrest Process
The Process of disallowing a Free Fall by restricting the
movement.

 Fall Arrest Process can broadly be divided into Two Broad

Guidelines-
1) Passive Fall arrest Methodology
2) Active Fall Arrest Methodology
.
KARAM
Passive Fall Arrest
 Passive Fall Arrest-This is a categorisation of Fall Arrest Items which are
Acted upon and are not active by themselves-Behave in a passive
response.
The following products comes under Passive Fall Arrest :

 Safety Nets ---used in large open areas or long leading edges

elevations,gangways .

 Containment Nets---designed to catch small falling debris or falling

objects by the motive of protecting them against the strike of Falling
objects.

KARAM
Active Fall Arrest
An operational ,system which needs an active interface for operating. This type
of Equipment needs functional dynamism and operation on the part of Worker.
Four main Categories of Active Fall Arrest are:

1. Fall Arrest---required when the risk of falling from an elevated level exists

2. Positioning---holds workers in place keeping their hands free for performing

3. Retrieval---primarily used as retrieving systems when workers enter tanks or

manholes and may require retrieval or evacuation or during an emergency.

4. Suspension– Equipment used for suspending or lowering workers to facilitate

jobs -widely used in functions such as maintaining the exteriors of structures
and buildings .

KARAM
The following products comes under Active Fall Arrest System:

 Anchor /Anchorage points

Critical point in all active fall protection.
 Lanyard
Permits limited lateral movement.
 Safety belts
Traditional means of body support with poor force distribution .Use to limit movement not
fall arrest.
 Harness
A full body harness distributes fall impact to the various sections of the human body .
 Shock absorber
Devices work by the unfolding and tearing of stretched webbing to reduce the impact
load experienced by the worker.

KARAM
 Lifelines
A horizontal lifeline serves as a mobile fixture to attach lanyards, lifelines,or retracting lifeline.
 Retracting lifelines devices
A portable self-contained device fixed to an anchorage point above the work area.-Ideal for use
on sloping roofs and angular structures.
 A vertical lifeline(drop-line)
extends from an independent anchorage point to which a lanyard is attached using a grabbing
device.(Fall Arrester)
 Connectors
Karabiners (twist lock),snap hook,big hook,shackles & d-rings.
 Rescue winch & tripod:
For confined spaces entry (manhole, tanks, tunnel, pipeline etc.)and retrieval during an emergency

KARAM
FALL PROTECTION
 Definition

Fall Protection is defined as the means of preventing

workers from experiencing disastrous accidental falls
from elevation by effectively use of Fall Arrest
Equipment also known as Personal Protective
Equipment (P.P.E.)

KARAM
P.P.E Second line of Defence
The following points needs to be evaluated for effective use of P.P.E.
 Correct methodology for usage of P.P.E
 Selection Criterion for choosing Right P.P.E.
 Market Study
 Trends Study
 Check List

KARAM
Fall Protection Products
 Safety Belts
 Safety Nets
 Rope Ladders
 Full Body Harness
 Positioning Belts
 Ropes
 Rope Clasp Fall Arresters
 Retractable Fall Arrester Blocks
 Hooks & Karabiners
 Safety Helmets
 Tripod Stands
 Winches
 Descender Ascender Devices

KARAM
DID YOU KNOW?
 Safety Belts normally used are a Hazardous
design.
 Medically Unfit to be used –Heavy Load Impacts
transferred on the Spine & Rib Cage Area.

KARAM
Traditional Safety Belts
 Traditional Design
 Poor ergonomics
 Defective Load Distribution
 Heavy Impacts on the Spine & Rib
Cage
 Direct Threat to Injury on Spine & Rib
Cage

KARAM
Possible effects
 Possible Severe Internal Bleeding to Death
 Rib Cage Fracture
 Chest Congestion
 Traumatology suggests-Severe Shock can even make the
person Unconscious

KARAM
Solution
FULL BODY SAFETY HARNESS

Advantages:
 Effective Load Distribution
 The lower Part consisting of Thigh straps &
Sit straps that can take maximum Impact and
a vertical Fall.
 Virtually no Impact on the Chest, Spin and Rib
Cage.
 Effective Ergonomics and Comfort.

Accessories:
Fall Arrester / Anchorage Hooks / Ropes / Shock
Absorbers etc.

KARAM
Equipment Inspection Maintenance& Storage

 INSPECTION
All component parts of your fall arrest equipment must be given a
formal visual and functional inspection by a competent person/safety
officer at regular basic and before each use.

 Inspection should be recorded on the record card.

KARAM
Equipment Inspection Maintenance& Storage
 WEBBING
No evidence of fraying, tears, cuts, burns, mould, discoloration or chemical
attack.

 STICHING
No evidence of broken stitches ,loosening, pulling or cuts.

 BUCKLES
Free from rust pitting ,distortion, cracks or excessive wear.Sliding buckles
should move freely.Pay special attention on ‘D’ Ring.

KARAM
Equipment Inspection Maintenance& Storage

 KARABINERS & SNAPHOOKS

Ensure bar or snap closes itself fully without
misalignment and distortion.Locking device prevents
opening under very firm pressure.

 ROPE GRABS&ROPE ADJUSTERS

All moving and working parts operating freely.

KARAM
Equipment Inspection Maintenance& Storage
 ROPES
Check for loose, strands, cuts, abrasions, excessive flattening on outer
faces ,chemical attacks, burns and evidence of powdered fiber.

 ARRESTER BLOCKS
Pull out entire length of rope and check for corrosion,
fray, loose, strands.Look for sign of crack & dents on housing.

KARAM
Equipment Inspection Maintenance& Storage
 MAITENANCE & STORAGE

 Cleaning should be carried out using mild detergent and water.

 Wet webbing should be allowed to dry naturally, away from open fire or other
source of heat.

 Equipment should be properly store to prevent contact with sharp objects and
harmful substances.

 Synthetic materials must kept in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.

KARAM
DO’S
 Carry out a full visual inspection of your Fall Arrest system every time before
use.

 Make sure that every part of your Fall Arrest system is fully compatible.

 Use an anchorage that is located directly above the working position.

 Use approved permanent anchorage point that have been build.

 Use only attachment hooks that arrest are tested, approved and compatible.

KARAM
DO’S
 Always ensure that the closing bar on the karabiner hook is locked.
Check by applying pressure against the bar.

 Make sure the space you would travel through in the event of fall is
free from protrusions and hazards.

 Ensure that harness is fitted closed to your body to prevent upward

movement in the event of a fall.

KARAM
DONT’S
 Do not anchor to a structure that can fall.

 Do not use an anchorage point that will not take a shock load of 1000kg.

 Do not use an anchorage point that is located below the point of

attachment to your harness.

 Do not use waist connection points on a harness.

 Do not loop lanyards around structure with sharp edges.

KARAM
DONT’S
 Do not use any Fall Arrest system without reading the user Manual.

 Do not use any Fall Arrest equipment without familiarization training.

 Do not mix different manufacturer products without checking compatibility.

 Do not use any products that have signs of wear and tear.

 If you have doubts DO NOT use it.

 Do not extend the length of your lanyard beyond 2M.

KARAM
LET US ARREST FALLS BEFORE THEY ARREST US.
