RATES (KADAR)

Rate is the change of a quantity with respect

to another quantity.
It shows how two quantities with different
units are related to each other.
Rate is a special ratio involving two quantities
of different units.
Examples, in the ratio , we compare the
distance travelled in km with the time taken
in hours. The ratio is known as a rate.
Examples of rates:

(a) Speed =
(b) Acceleration =
(c) Pressure =
(d) Density =

**Rates cannot be expressed as a percentage

•Examples:

1. State the rates and two quantities (including

units) involved in the following situations.
(a) Sarah bought 5 litre of mineral water
at RM 8.

Solution:
Rates =
Two quantities involved are the volume
(litre) and the amount of money (RM).
•   (b) Amirul pays RM 20 to buy 5 notebooks.
Solution:
Rates =
Two quantities involved are the amount of
money (RM) and the number of books.
(c) The shaft of an engine makes 400 revolutions in
8 seconds.
Rates =
Two quantities involved are the number of
revolutions and time (seconds).
Conversion of units of rates
• 1 litre (l) = 1000 ml
• 1 ml = 1 cm3
• 1 hour = 60 minutes
• 1 minute = 60 seconds
• 1 hour = 3600 seconds
• 1 day = 24 hours
•Examples:

1. A bird takes hours to fly as far as 54 km.
Calculate the speed, in ms1, for the bird.

Solution:
Speed =
= 30 ms1
•2.   Convert the unit of rate to the unit stated in the
bracket.
(a) 8 200 kgm2 [ g cm2]
Solution :

= 820 g cm2
(b) 6.3 l / km [ ml / m]
Solution :

= 6.3 ml / m
•Sometimes
the conversion of units of rates is used to
compare two or more rates with different units
Example:
Two stalls sells tomates from Cameron Highlands. Which
stall sells tomatoes at a cheaper price?
Solution :
Stall Price
Price of tomatoes at stall B A RM 15 per kg
= B RM 7 per 500 g
=
= = RM 14 per kg
Thus, the price of tomatoes at stall B is cheaper than
the price of tomatoes at stall A.
