COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

POLICY WITH OBE


INTRODUCTION
A collection policy is established in every library for one or more
definite purpose. It describes the actions and beliefs that govern the
systematic development of collection in the college library. This serves
as a document that put the library in context by outlining institutional
goals and objectives, and describing the program of teaching and
research that the collection supports.

resources, which support the curriculum and assist the community.”

growth is driven by a knowledge-based workface.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT GOALS
 

The collection development objectives are to enhance


teaching, encourage research, render reference services and
support the school’s mission in its curriculum: “Competence
in curricular and co-curricular program, Information
Communication Technology (ICT), and Research”.

This policy is also designed to achieve the STI libraries


mission statement: “The Mission of the Libraries of STI is to
help students grow in knowledge, understanding, wisdom to
the world around us, through library resources, which support
the curriculum and assist the community.”
LIBRARY USERS
 All bonafide College students, Senior High School, Administrators,
Faculty & Staff are considered users of the college library.

• Other individuals who are not enrolled may be also


considered users of the college library, but they will be
charged P20.00 per hour as an admission. They are not
allowed to check out books from the college library.

A. Selection of Library Materials


1. Library materials are acquired when there is available
budget and are really needed by the users.
2. Intellectually content of the materials should be meet, such
as: scope, arrangement and organization, relevance and recency
of information, special features and overall value of the
collection.

3. These should be relevant to the nature of the curricular
offerings of the school and the type of instruction conducted.
4. There must be fairly high rating in number of titles,
balanced, distribution, and appropriateness for institutional
purposes and recency of publication.

B. Procedures on the acquisition of library materials.


1. Check the present holdings of the library in relation to
materials too be ordered.
2. Refer the materials to the faculty concerned, or the
principals or deans for basic education is considered.
3. Check the budget if fund is available.

4. Process the cash request for approval.
5. Select the necessary books and other instructional materials with due
consideration on the budget allocation.
6. Process the new arrival; undergo step-by-step process: collating,
stamping, accessioning, cataloging, labeling, placing book cards and
pockets, then ready for shelving to be used by clients/users.
 
COLLECTION EVALUATION
• There is an evaluation of collection through direct
observation on the circulation records if they are still of
importance or not.

Disposal of all library materials should be approved by the library


committee considering the following criteria:
1. Materials that have no longer reference value and proven obsolete to
the curricular offerings of the school are disposed.
2. Worn-out materials beyond repair with missing pages are disposed.

3. Multiple copies of donated books/materials may be sold or


given to some institutions that need them most.
4. Back issues of magazines and newspapers are disposed or
sold after important articles have been clipped for vertical
files.

A. Out- of- print and Facsimile Materials

1. Books or materials that are out-of-print or difficult to acquire can be


reproduced; provided that these materials will be used for reference
purposes only.
2. Photocopying of books and periodicals are allowed except for
copies of theses and dissertations.

B. Gifts/Donations

1. The library accepts gifts or donations in any form with the


understanding that the library will have the right to these to the fullest
capacity and to dispose materials when their usefulness have ended.
2. Gifts and Donated books are processed and integrated in the
library’s holdings and shelved in each particular section where they are
useful.

C. Dissertations/ Theses 
 1. Dissertations and theses are part of the library’s collection
2. These are placed at closed reserved which can be used as reference
and are strictly to be used only inside the library.
3. Reproduction of any part of this collection is prohibited.

D. Reference Collection 

1. These materials are to be used only inside the library, since


they are of general use, such as the dictionaries, atlases,
encyclopedias, yearbooks, almanacs, annuals and etc.
2. These materials could be checked out, but in a case – to –
case basis.

E. Classification of library Materials

• The library uses the Dewey Decimal System (DDC) in


organizing books and materials so they can be found quickly
and easily by the users. It is also a means of bringing books
on the same subject together so that they can be used
conveniently.

1. These materials are to be used only inside the library, since


they are of general use, such as the dictionaries, atlases,
encyclopedias, yearbooks, almanacs, annuals and etc.
2. These materials could be checked out, but in a case – to –
case basis.

 1. These materials include periodicals, magazines, newspapers and tabloids. They
are processed and are indexed for efficient use.
2. Generally, these materials are to be used only inside the library; however, they
can be also checked out with the permission from the library personnel.

B. Periodical Subscriptions
1. The librarian accepts recommended titles from the faculty and administrators.
2. The librarian makes a list of periodicals for subscription and prepares
subscription letters.
3. The subscribed periodicals are recorded and processed before they are ready for
use.
