COVID -19

What is the meaning of COVID-19?

 COVID-19 is a disease caused by a
new strain of corona virus. 'CO' stands
for corona, 'VI' for virus, and
'D' for Disease. Formerly, this disease
was referred to as '2019 novel corona
virus' or '2019-nCoV.'
How did the corona virus disease start?
Several of the early cases had visited
Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market and so
the virus is thought to have a zoonotic
origin.

The virus that caused the outbreak is

known as SARS‐CoV‐2, a newly discovered
virus closely related to bat corona viruses,
pangolin corona viruses, and SARS-CoV.

 People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy

should manage their symptoms at home.

 On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected

with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up

to 14 days.
 How dangerous is COVID-19?
• Although for most people COVID-19 causes only
mild illness, it can make some people very ill.

• More rarely, the disease can be fatal.

• Older people, and those with pre- existing medical

conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart
problems or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable.
 Who is at risk for Corona virus?
The virus that causes COVID-19 infects people of all ages.
However, evidence to data suggests that two groups of
people are at a higher risk of getting severe COVID-19
disease.

 These are older people (that is people over 60 years old);

and those with underlying medical conditions (such as
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory
disease,andcancer).
The risk of severe disease gradually

increases with age starting from around 40

years. It's important that adults in this age

range protect themselves and in turn protect

others that may be more vulnerable

 Preventive measures disease?
Preventive measures to reduce the chances of infection
include:
 Staying at home,
 Avoiding crowded places,
 Keeping distance from others,
 Washing hands with soap and water often and for at least
20 seconds,
