ADVANCE THEORY OF

STRUCTURE

BEAMS ON ELASTIC
FOUNDATIONS
BY-SAGAR VARIYA
Introduction
• The beam lies on
elastic foundation
when under the
applied external loads,
the reaction forces of
the foundation are
proportional at every
point to the deflection
of the beam at this
point.
• This assumption was
introduced first by
winkler in 1867.
•*Beneath
the foundation soil mass is consider as identical,
Independent, closely spaced linearly elastic springs which is
known as wrinkler foundation.

• The beam resting on elastic foundation is met with in foundation

slabs in pavements for highways, runways and rail road track.
• So, main two assumptions made is;
1)The foundation is elastic.
i.e., settlement at any point pressure at that point.
2)The foundation modulus or the spring constant is same for
tension as well as for compression.
classification
*•  The beams on elastic foundation are classified
as:
1)Long beams/infinite beams:-
-Where,l=length of beam.
-length>> depth & width, also
- and M @ ends =0 ,because assumed that ends are far
enough from loads .
2)Medium beams/finite beams:-
-
3)Short beams:-
-
*   problems is solved by the elastic curve equation;
