WHAT IS CIDCO?
City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd
CIDCO
• The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) is a city
planning organization created by theGovernment of Maharashtra.
• CIDCO was formed on 17 March 1970 under the Indian Companies Act of 1956. Its
purpose at the time of its creation was to develop a satellite town to
Mumbai, Maharashtra India to ease traffic congestion in the city and provide open spaces,
playing fields, housing and industrial sites outside the city.
• The goal was to shift population and commercial activities from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai,
which would be sustainable physically, economically and environmentally. The new city
was projected to gain two million people and 750,000 jobs from the 1970s through the
1990s.
• The impact of Navi Mumbai on the growth of Mumbai was reflected in the 1980s. The
1991 census recorded a 10% decrease in population growth rate for greater Mumbai,
compared to the previous decade.
• For the island city (a part of greater Mumbai), growth in the 1980s was negative for the
first time. The reason for this phenomenon can partly be attributed to the growth of
extended suburbs and partly to Navi Mumbai which provided an alternative path for
growth.
OBJECTIVES
1. Reduction of population overcrowding in core cities

2. Absorption of emigrants and preventing the emigration of present

population by providing better conditions and new opportunities

3. Setting the industrial pace of the State with the help of balanced urban
development

4. Provision of excellent socio-economic facilities, thereby

improving the quality of life
Course of action
• In order to achieve these goals, CIDCO started to develop land and provide
the required physical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, drainage and
sewerage system, drinking water system and street lights.
• It has built a stock of houses supported by social infrastructure such as
community centres, markets, parks, education institutes and playgrounds. It
promotes commercial activities, warehousing, transportation and
decentralisation of government administration.
• Lastly, it involves agencies in the development of public transport and
telecommunication.

Navi Mumbai has become a unique project by virtue of its – pattern of
development, housing, social and physical infrastructure, method of finance
and sustainable futuristic planning.

Navi Mumbai is known extensively for its judicious planning; earning the
city a reputation of being a Super City and one of the largest planned city on
Earth.

It prepared a master plan in October 1970 and was approved by the

government in August 1971.

The pattern ensured balanced land and even distribution of residential areas,
job centres, wholesale markets, non-polluting industry and population
density. Navi Mumbai is endowed with various facilities and has best of all.

CIDCO, as the efficient planner of Cities, has already begun preparations to

accommodate this prospective and definitive influx coming its way in the
near future.

RAJ REWAL HOUSING
ABOUT….
• In 1998 the CIDCO housing faces the challenge of providing low cost
housing approximately 1000 in number.
• Most of the tenements built in this complex are of one or two rooms.
• Instead of building large monolithic parallel blocks of grim dimensions, a
different kind of settlement pattern was opted for.
• The design for the large number of dwelling units is fragmented into smaller
aggregations enclosing a variety of spaces, which can be cohesively arranged
on the sloping site of a hillock and strung together with pedestrian pathways.

Panvel is emerging as a major magnet in Navi Mumbai. Last year, the state
government widened the Sion-Panvel highway, making it a 10-lane artery. The
100-km-long Mumbai-Pune expressway also begins at Panvel. The government is
also planning to allow real estate developments along the expressway over the
coming years.
➢ One of the major triggers for growth in Navi Mumbai in recent years has been the
announcement by the Maharashtra government of the setting up of a greenfield
international airport at Panvel. 2,320 hectares.

➢ Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link will connect the airport with Mumbai.
The new airport will have a 10-lane approach road to its terminal building flanked
by its two runways.

➢ Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is being developed under the smart city mission.

➢ The town planning authority of mumbai is developing
