UNIT – II: HARMONY AND HUMAN BEING

• Harmony in the Human being

Harmony in the Family
Harmony in the Society
Harmony in the Nature

1
Topics Covered

1. Human Being –
Not just a body, It is combination of mind
and body
2. Understanding Harmony Levels
a. Harmony in the Human Being
b. Harmony in the Family
c. Harmony in the Society
d. Harmony in Nature/Existence
2
2.1 Human Being is the co-existence of Mind and
Body
Mind Information
Body
(conscious entity) ( material entity)

mind takes decisions and instructs the body

Body co-exists with mind

Mind Information Body

(Conscious entity) (material entity)

Body cannot decide or instruct the mind.

Mind co-exist with the body. Mind and body keep exchanging
Information.
3
Mind and Body

Human Mind (I) Body

Being

Need Happiness (e.g. Respect) Physical Facility (e.g.

Food)
In Time Continuous Temporary (Usually a
person takes food three
times per day)

In Qualitative (is Feeling) Quantitative (Required

Quantity Quantity)

Fulfilled Right Understanding & Material Things

By Right Feeling

4
Mind and Body (Cont…)

Human Mind (I) Body

Being
Activity Desire, Thought, Eating, Walking…
Expectation…

In Time Continuous Temporary (Usually a

person walks when
needed)

Knowing, Assuming,
Response Recognizing, Fulfilling Recognizing, Fulfilling

5
6
Need of both Mind and Body
Lots of physical facilities – but may not necessary to be happy.

Example: Lots of wealth – but do not have right feelings – not happy

Lot of right understanding – but lack of physical facilities (body is not healthy) –
No happiness

We need both: since one is the need of body which is taken care of and
other is the need of Mind with right feelings.

7
The confusion we are in today:
We assume that : All we need is physical facilities and we think we shall be
ensure happiness.

We need to work for both happiness in Mind (I) and physical facilities for the
body.

Example:

1. Body and Mind are not same. Body must be in good state and also mind
must be happy.
2. Wearing of good clothes does not guarantee respect from others.

8
We are all doing works in Three ways

Natural Acceptance means that accepting the things/situations whole heartedly

by individual, family, society.

1. No Natural Acceptance, but forced to do.

2. Natural Acceptance, but others are not happy.
3. Natural Acceptance , Mutual Happiness.

9
To have mutual happiness:

Natural Mutual Yes

No
Desire Meets ?
Problem
Acceptance Happiness
No

Change or Discard
the Desire

Realization
Understanding

Desire
Plan
Implementation

10
To have mutual happiness (Cont…)

1. Test your desire.

2. If the desire is naturally acceptable then there is a mutual happiness.

3. If the desire is not naturally acceptable then there is no mutual happiness.

a) Then there is a problem with Mind.

b) So you have to realize and understand that either we modify or discard

the desire.

11
2.2 Understanding Levels:

– As an individual – Harmony in the human being

– As a member of family – Harmony in the family

– As a member of society – Harmony in the society

– As a unit in the nature – Harmony in the nature

12
Where do we stand today
• At the level of Individual: Rising problems of depression,
psychological disorder, suicides, stress, insecurity, health problem.

• At the level of Family: Breaking of joint family, mistrust and

insecurity in relationship, divorce, legal suits.

• At the level of Society: Terrorism, casteism, wars between nations,

fear of nuclear war.

• At the level of nature: Global warming, water, soil, air and noise
pollution.

So, to have continuous happiness, we need to have harmony at all

the levels.

13
Continuity of Happiness
To Have Continuity of Happiness = Harmony at all levels of my
Being. i.e.
1. Harmony in the Human Being
2. Harmony in the Family
3. Harmony in the Society
4. Harmony in Nature/Existence

14
Role of Education - Sanskar: Enable Transformation
Education is a process of character building and is also reflection of a good
Human behavior.

Formal education is classroom-based, provided by trained teachers.

Non-formal education happens outside the classroom, society at large and

family influence.

Sanskar is to purify, to refine, to supplement, to brighten, to adorn the inner

conscience.

15
Role of Education - Sanskar: Enable Transformation (Cont…)

MUTUAL HAPPINESS MUTUAL PROSPERITY

Note: All illiterates may not have animal consciousness. Some of the
literates may have animal consciousness. 16
Response of Mind

1. Knowing = To see reality as it is (Right Understanding)

2. Assuming = What am I, what is the other human being and rest-of-nature

3. Recognizing = My relationship with the other human being and rest-of-

nature

4. Fulfilling = Fulfillment of my relationship with other human being and

rest-of-nature

17
2.3 RELATIONSHIPS
&
FEELINGS IN RELATIONSHIPS

18
COMMON RELATIONSHIPS

1. Me and Parents
2. Me and my family members
3. Me and Teacher
4. Me and Friends
5. Me and Boss/Colleague
6. Me and Society

HARMONY IN THE FAMILY

1. Relationship is – between one self (I1) and other self (I2)

2. There are feelings in relationship – in one self (I1) for other self (I2)

3. These feelings can be recognized – they are definite (9 Feelings)

4. Their fulfilment, evaluation leads to mutual happiness 19

2.5 FEELINGS IN RELATIONSHIP

1. Trust 4. Care 7. Glory

2. Respect 5. Guidance 8. Gratitude
3. Affection 6. Reverence 9. Love

Are these feelings naturally acceptable to you?

When you live with these feelings, does it lead to your happiness?

When you express these feelings to other, does it lead to the happiness of
the other?

1. TRUST (విశ్వాసము)
Trust = to be assured
= to have the clarity that the other wants to make me
happy & prosperous

20
ABOUT THE OTHER ABOUT MYSELF
The glass broke by accident
The glass broke by accident
I came late to class
He came late to class Even if the other
makes the same mistake 100 times…
– The other is like me, I am clear When I make a mistake even once…
about his intention – I am clear about my intention
– I know the mistake is due to lack
of competence, not a lack of – I know the mistake is due to lack
intention of competence, not a lack of
– If I have more competence, I help intention
the other to improve his – I make effort to improve my own
competence competence (understanding,
– I know “he may have difficulty feeling & skill).
understanding… and I may have
difficulty in explaining…”

Trust on good intention of others is the starting point for mutual fulfillment
21
ABOUT THE OTHER ABOUT MYSELF
The other broke a glass The glass broke by accident
He always comes late to class I came late to class

If the other makes a mistake even once… Even if I make the same mistake 100
– I doubt his intention, I don’t ask times…
“why”, “how”… I jump to the – I never doubt my intention
conclusion “he makes mistakes
intentionally”
– I condemn the other, reinforce the – I reinforce “I am good”
feeling that “The other is bad”
– I get irritated, angry… have a – I make mistakes by accident
feeling of opposition…
– I conclude the other does not want
– I do not make effort to improve
to improve his competence
my own competence

Doubt on intention of others is a major reason for problems in relationships

22
CHECK WITHIN YOURSELF
If you have unconditional and continuous trust on intention (natural
acceptance) of the other and if the other is lacking competence,
what will you do:
a) Try to improve his competence
b) We get irritated
c) We get angry
d) We have a feeling of opposition

How many persons do you have trust on intention (natural

acceptance)
– unconditional and continuous?
This is fundamental. Trust on intention is the foundation of
relationship
You can get an idea of the state of your understanding about
relationship from this… and make a program to develop trust
accordingly
23
2. RESPECT : RIGHT EVALUATION
Over evaluation – to evaluate far more than what it is

Under evaluation – to evaluate for less than what it is

Disrespect

Otherwise evaluation – to evaluate for other than what it is

Whenever the evaluation is not right, it is disrespect

Check for yourself in every interaction with others whether it is

leading to respect or disrespect

If we observe, we find in our day to day relationship, we tend to do

one of the above three, which is nothing but disrespect to others.
RESPECT: Right Evaluation – on the basis of the Self (I)
1. Purpose
 I want to live with continuous happiness & prosperity
 The other also wants to live with continuous happiness
& prosperity
2. Program
 My program is to understand and to live in harmony at
all 4 levels
 The program of the other is also to understand and to
live in harmony at all 4 levels
3. Potential
 Desire, Thought & Expectation is continuous in me. I
am endowed with Natural Acceptance
 Desire, Thought & Expectation is continuous in the
other. The other is also endowed with Natural
Acceptance

The Gross Misunderstanding is

“Physical Facility = Happiness”
It is not necessary that a person who is wealthy or in a powerful
position is happy.

The Gross Misunderstanding is

Strength

Differentiation = Disrespect
Not Naturally Acceptable… Opposition… Movement…

Evaluation on the basis of Body, Physical Facility or Beliefs (preconditioning)

turns out to be differentiation and therefore disrespect

Differentiation like this has led to resentments and protests. Eg Women's Lib,
Generation Gap, Black vs White, Powerful vs Opressed, Rich-Poor,
Communism-Capatalism, Hindu-Muslim and so on
RESPECT: Right Evaluation – on the basis of the Self (I)
1. Purpose – Our purpose (Natural Acceptance) is same
2. Program – Our program is same
3. Potential – Our potential is same

The Other is Similar to Me

4. Competence – On the basis of right evaluation of our mutual competence, I
recognise our complementarity:
If the other has more understanding, is more responsible than me
 I am committed to understand from the other
If I have more understanding, I am more responsible than the other
1. I live with responsibility with the other, unconditionally, unperturbed by
the behaviour of the other
2. I am committed to facilitate understanding in the other (once the other is
assured in relationship, and not before that)

The Other is Similar to Me. We are complementary to each other

DIFFERENTIATION RESPECT – on the basis of Self (I)
I evaluate on the basis of body, 1. Our purpose (Natural Acceptance) is
physical facilities or belief (pre similar
conditioning). I compare, compete, 2. Our program is similar
differentiate…
3. Our potential is similar
I am different from the other
The other is similar to me
We are competitors
We are complementary to each other
I make effort to accentuate the
If the other has more understanding than
difference, to manipulate, exploit
me
the other
- I am committed to understand from
the other
If I have more understanding
1. I live with responsibility with the
other
2. I am committed to facilitate
understanding in the other (once the
other is assured in relationship, and
not before that)
31
3. AFFECTION
The feeling of being related to the other
(acceptance of the other as one’s relative, the other is like me)

One naturally feels related to the other when one has the feelings
of Trust and Respect in oneself for the other

Responsibility and commitment for mutual fulfilment

Absence of Affection = Opposition, Jealousy

4. CARE (మమత)
• Providing Physical Facilities to My Relatives called as Care.
• My Relatives:
1. My Brother
2. My Sister
3. My Father
4. My Mother
5. My Friend etc., anybody who is related with me.

PROBLEMS WITH “CARE”

Overflow of Care (మమత) leads to lack in Guidance.

Examples: In the nuclear families (not in joint families)

• If children ask for chocolate we use to purchase and give huge
box of chocolates, biscuits, etc.,
• Now in our houses more in care (మమత) and less in Guidance.
33
SCENARIO
• Our children's teacher asked to learn house address as an assignment at UKG Level. Now
he is trying to memorize the address.

• Instead of that ask him in a way that, what is our city name, what is our street name, what is
our house number. It will help him very easy to understand / remember the address.

• Now we should guide him in a proper manner such that he comes out of confusion.

• Every child wants to learn everything. Our duty is putting efforts towards to it in a right
manner can be defined as Guidance.

34
• If they share all the things with us then we can Guide them in a better
manner.
• So making sure to share everything and direct them in a Right manner can
also be termed as Guidance.
• Our duty is also to make them understood Right Utilization of items is also
termed as Guidance.
• Examples: TV, Mobile, Car, Bike, etc.,
• If Guidance lacks it leads to many serious problems like addicting to TV,
mobile, drugs etc.,
• Students who have joined in the college were in a protected environment
(Care & Guidance from parents, teachers & college).
• You could succeed and joined in the institution
• From now onwards you have may not such care and guidance from parents,
teachers and institute.
• You have to be aware of this and take responsibility for your progress.

35
THREE MAJOR THINGS TOWARDS RIGHT DIRECTION
1)Data x,y,k,p,q,z Simply Data(this data is meaningless)

2)Information BIRD Information is there.

The one which is in reality have meaning only

3)Knowledge

Knowledge is explaining using visuals. You should reach upto the knowledge level.

36
6. REVERENCE
 The feeling of acceptance for Excellence.

 We understand that we aspire for continuous happiness and to realize it,

we have to understand harmony at all the levels of our living, and live
accordingly.

 When we see that the other has achieved this excellence- which means
to understand and to live in harmony at all the levels of living ensuring
continuity of happiness, we have a feeling of reverence for him/her.

Example: Anand has a reverence for the environment that prevents her from
throwing trash in the lake.

Excellence and competition are not similar.

In excellence, one helps to bring the other to his level
In competition, Me has to assess the level of achievement of topper and
how he could attain.
EXCELLENCE
Excellent = Having Right Understanding and Right Feeling

Excellence
Understanding Harmony & at all 4 levels
Living in Harmony 1. In the Self, as an Individual
2. In Family
3. In Society
4. In Nature/Existence
WORKING FOR EXCELLENCE COMPETING TO BE SPECIAL
• The other is like me – • Not other – only me
• we are complementary • I am different/more than the other
• Helps the other to come to his level. • Stops the other to come to his level -
effort to accentuate the difference, to
• Operates on the basis of his Natural dominate, manipulate, exploit.
Acceptance (that is definite) – • Operates on the basis of his
swatantra, self driven by clarity of preconditioning (that changes) –
human purpose. driven by other on the basis of reward
/ fear of punishment.
• Trust, respect... In relationship • Conditional relationship, over-
evaluation of self & under-evaluation
• Is Prosperous – Rightly Utililises,
of other.
Shares, Nurtures • Is Depriving others – Hoards,
Accumulates, Exploits
• Absolute (definite completion point)
• Relative (no definite completion
point)

Result: There will be no mutual understanding not good for both

and hence to society as a whole. 39
7. GLORY
 Feeling for those who have made effort for excellence.

 We find that there have been people in the history, or even

around us, who are investing their time, energy and their
belongings to achieve excellence, to make others excellent.

 This gives us a feeling of glory for them.

Examples:

• As a young soldier he dreamed of winning military glory.

• He now has only a few trophies to remind him of the glory of

his future athletic career.
40
EXCELLENCE TO BE SPECIAL
• The other is like me – we are • Not other – me
complementary • I am different from the other
• Rights – Happiness, Prosperity  • Rights – Happiness, Prosperity 
Continuity
Continuity
• Goals – 4 Human Goals
• Goals – Accumulation of Physical
– Artha (Security) Facility, maximization of sensation…
– Kama (Pleasure)
– Dharma (Ethics)
– Moksha (Liberation)
• Responsibility – ?
• Responsibility – To understand
harmony & to live in harmony at all
levels of being.
• Self Development – ?
• Self development
• One cannot reach the top to become
glorious.
• Development of Others & society
41
8. GRATITUDE

• Feeling of acceptance for those who have made effort for my excellence

• Gratitude is significant in the development of relationship

9. LOVE

Verify on the basis of your natural acceptance if you want to be related to:

X None- The feeling of being related to none – in opposition to all

√ One- The feeling of being related to one

√ Many- The feeling of being related to many

√ Everyone-The feeling of being related to all (Love) i.e society.

42
LOVE CONTD…..
Love- The feeling of being related to all (Complete Value)

• It all starts with identifying that one is related to other human

being(Affection) and it slowly expands to the feeling of being related to all
human beings (Love) and then to all, each & every unit in nature (human
being as well as other units in society and nature.)

• Feeling of Love is expressed in the form of kindness , beneficence &

compassion .
• The feeling is for all, and it is expressed to all those who are in regular
contact.

• The feeling of Love is the foundation of Undivided Society

43
AFFECTION Vs LOVE

• Affection – The feeling of being related to the other (acceptance of

the other as one’s relative)

• Love – The feeling of being related to all (Complete Value)

PRECONDITIONING RELATED TO LOVE

1. Love at First Sight

2. The Other has many friends; I have None
3. If a girl smiles and talks to a boy, why does the boy assumes
something else
4. If a boy & girl speak to each other, why do people assume it is wrong

44
PRECONDITIONING RELATED TO LOVE Contd..

Common misunderstanding – The sensation & feeling is mixed up

Sensation – Liking, Vasna, based on getting from the other, no

continuity is possible
Feeling – Love, Prem, based on giving to the other, continuity is
desirable, and possible
Love is a feeling – once Trust, Respect, Affection, Care, Guidance
are ensured, the feeling of being related to all follows naturally

Revisit:
• 1. Physical Facility = Happiness?
• 2. Sensation = Happiness? Tasty-Necessary
• 3. Excitement = Happiness?
45
CONCLUDING REMARKS

It must be remembered that all the nine feelings we must have towards
others, family and society to develop mutual understanding with us.

Even if one of the feeling is missing mutual understanding does not

develop.

Never assume that the others are not reciprocating similar feelings
towards us.

The distance between Hyderabad to Delhi is same as between Delhi

and Hyderabad.
