PLANE Definition
A rectangular coordinate system is formed
by two perpendicular number lines. On is
Y-axis horizontal or x-axis and one is vertical or y-
axis, that intertsect at the zero point of each
line.

X-axis

The point of intersection O(0,0) is called

ORIGIN. Two lines are called COORDINATE
AXES, or simply axes. The axes determine
a plane, called RECTANGULAR OR
CARTESIAN PL:ANE.
ORDER PAIR
Each point in the plane can be
identified by a pair of number
called an order pair (x,y) .
Example (2,3) (-3,-1)

FIRST VALUE of the order pair

(x,y) is called ABSCISSA.
SECOND VALUE of the order pair
(x,y) is called ORDINATE.

Example :
(2,3)
2 is abscissa and
3 is an ordinate
QUADRANT

The two axes divide the plane into four regions

called quadrants.

Example :
Determine the x-coordinate and y-
corrdinate of the following points,
mention quadrant in wich each point
lies. Also plot the point.
(3,1)
X-coordinate = abscissa = 3
Y-coordinate = ordinate = 1
Given point lies in quadrat 1
(-2,-4)
X-coordinate = abscissa = -2
Y-coordinate = ordinate = -4
Given point lies in quadrat 3
(1,-3)
X-coordinate = abscissa = 1
Y-coordinate = ordinate = -3
Given point lies in quadrat 4
(4,0)
X-coordinate = abscissa = 4
Y-coordinate = ordinate = 0

Linear Equation

An equation of the form

ax + by = c where a,b,c R
and x,y are variables
is called linear equation.

Note: solution of linear

equation is a set of all order
pair ( infinite points) that
satisfied the given linear
equation.

Example : equation similarly put y= 5
Graph 3x – 5y = -10 3x – 5(5) = -10
For that graph we find at least 3x – 25 = -10
two order pair. 3x = -10 + 25
3x = 15
First, put x =0 X=5
3(0) – 5y = -10 So the order pair is (5,5)
- 5y = -10
y=2 And the graph of line
So the order pair is (0,2) 3x – 5y = -10 is
