MICROBIOLOGY LAB

INTRODUCTION

Lab Safety rules are major aspect of every microbiology lab. lab safety
is to make certain that no any adverse effect will be caused be any
potential hazard or agent in the laboratory.
Microbiology safety procedures:
It is divided in to:
1. Good lab practice
2. Eye safety
3. Hand safety
4. Chemical precaution
5. Glassware safety
6. Emergency safety
Before lab work,Get to know
Hazards of material and agents and their prescribed safety procedures.
Emergency spill procedures, use of absorbants and disinfectants.
Location of fire ext., eye wash, first aid, and spill kits.

GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICE
WHILE WORKING IN LAB
• To be entered to the lab, each student should wear laboratory coats and
appropriate shoes.
• Tie back long hair.
• Keep working areas clear of all
unnecessary items.
Disinfect your bench before
and after lab.
Don't eat drink or apply makeup in the lab.
Report all
• Accidents, Injuries, Fires ,Spills, Close calls

WHILE WORKING IN LAB
• Never remove specimens, cultures or equipment from the laboratory under
any circumustances.
• If you spill a drop of culture or if any type of incident occur call the
instructor immediately
-place the paper towel over any spill and pour . . .
disinfectant over the towel.
-let the disinfectant stand for 15 min, then clean the spill . .
with fresh paper towel.

course/lab section and experiment information. The experiment
information may include the composition of the solution identify the
culture, or the experiment number.

HEATING SAFETY

• If you using burner:

• Always be aware of flame.
• Keep flammable items away from the
flames.
• Turn off the burner when not in use.
• Let the burner cool down before touching them.
• Never point the end of the test tube being heated at yourself or others.
• When heating a test tube, move it around slowly over the flame to
distribute the heat evenly.
CHEMICAL SAFETY

Prevent contact with the skin by wearing gloves, mask and lab
coat.
• Mouth pippeting is strickly
proinhibted.

are required.
• Never taste chemicals unless
You are specifically told by the instructor.
• Wash your hands after handling any chemical.
GLASSWARE SAFETY

• Chipped or cracks glassware should not be used. Show it to teacher.


• When pouring liquid into the glassware,makesure container you are
pouring is to resting on a table at least the hands breadth from an edge.
• If a piece of glassware is broken don't try to clean it by yourself. Notify the
lab instructor.
• Handle the test tube with test tube holder
• Wash glassware with dish soap when the exercise is complete.
