CLIMATE CHANGE
GLOBAL WARMING
LESSON 1
Think and reflect about the quotation below. What does it tell you?

“The ecological crisis is a moral issue… Respect for

life and for the dignity of the human person extends
also to the rest of creation… We cannot interfere in one
are of the ecosystem without paying due attention both
to the consequences of such interference in other areas
and to the well-being of future generations.”
-John Paul II (1990)

LESSON 2
Think and reflect about the quotation below. What does it tell you?

“One of the big questions in the climate change debate:

Are humans any smarter than frogs in a pot? If you put
a frog in a pot and slowly turn up the heat, it won’t
jump out. Instead, it will enjoy the nice warm bath until
it is cooked to death. We humans seem to be doing
pretty much the same thing.”
-Jeff Goodell

APPLYING CRITICAL THINKING
 Peter Singer posed an ethical challenge in light of the climate change situation
facing humanity today. He said that by spraying deodorant at your armpit in
your New York apartment, you could, if you use an aerosol spray propelled by
CFCs,, be contributing to the skin cancer deaths, many years later, of people
living in Punta Arenas, Chile. By driving your car, you could be releasing
carbon dioxide that is part of a causal chain leading to lethal floods in
Bangladesh. (Peter Singer, 2000, p. 120)
 How can we adjust our ethics to take account of this new situation?
 What should be done personally and collectively?
RETHINK CRITICALLY
(Answer the following on a half sheet of yellow paper.)

2.What is the best option for us to adapt to climate change?
3.What adaptive capacity do we have that we should enhance
so that our communities become better prepared to cope with
climate change?

SUSTAINING DEMOCRACY
IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD
LESSON 2
There is an increasing
disenchantment with the
state of society in our
globalized world.
Dissatisfaction of the citizens to their governments
include:
1.Failure to meet their basic needs that create
profound insecurities
2. Failure to protect them from the sweeping winds
of economic change where they lost their customs
and traditions
3. Failure to involve its citizens in its policies and
programs.
Undemocratic practices
 stems from the government’s taking little
account of the needs of citizens who
expect much from them.
Three main roles of the state in a democratic
society
 As provider of essential laws, services, frameworks, and
environments that form the basis for meeting basic needs.
 As facilitator who is in-charge with safekeeping and
distribution of resources to the different groups of people
 As faithful promoter of policies and laws intended to help
citizens
Be an active citizen by:

 Engaging in collective action to perform

voluntary work with others in order to tackle
problems
 Participating in political processes to play an
active roles in relation to the state in order to
ensure that the state opened itself up to the
influence of citizens.
