Study of Effect of Gas Turbine and Compressor

Blades Deterioration on the Performance of Gas
Turbine Power Plant
BY

BLADE AND CASCADE NOMENCLATURE

 The flow in axial compressor is based on the studies of isolated

(Separated) air foils.

 Nomenclature methods and blade shape are similar (identical) to

the aircraft wings

 Cascade: - Involves several (more than two blade) in a row to

simulate on compress rotor or stator
SPECIMEN COMPRESSOR BLADE
PROJECT STATUS

 Model prepared from the actual profile of

compressor blade.
 Modeling of cascade profile is completed.
 Computational analysis done on cascade
profile by varying attack angle with
maintaining same pitch, velocity for smooth
blade.
 Further post processing is to be performed.
RESEARCH PLAN CONTD. …………..

Computation study is to be be carried out to find

out the deterioration of performance, caused by
roughness over compressor and turbine blade
surface, selecting entire and localized blade
locations/
         surface each for compressor and
turbine

In order to assess the optimal condition of a

generating set especially the degree of
contamination/fouling of compressor and
turbine. The deterioration over the blades of
actual power plant will be documented.
RESEARCH PLAN

THE INTERVAL OF SAID EVALUATIONS

DEPENDS ON HOW QUICKLY THE
CONTAMINATION/FOULING OF THE
TURBINE AND COMPRESSOR
PRODUCE AN UNDESIRABLE CHANGE
TO THE POWER GENERATING UNIT.
RESEARCH PLAN
CONTD…………..

Depending on the actual location the deposition

and erosion will be simulated and the effect of
these parameters on the performance of gas turbine
will be determined using fluent software,

WORK ON SOFT WARE

The steps has been as follows:

1. Exercises on GAMBIT
2. Creating geometry on AUTOCAD
3. Exporting the geometry Created on AUTOCAD
into GAMBIT
4. Exporting the geometry Created on
GAMBIT into fluent software
5. Setting the boundary conditions and
visualization of flow in different
configuration or geometries
