Why do we study English?
 English is the most common spoken
language in the world
 English is the language of Science, of

aviation, computers, diplomacy and


tourism.
 English is the official language of 53

countries.
 It is spoken as a first language by

around 400 million people around the


world.
 It is the language of the media

industry.
 Many website is written in English.
 English is based on simple alphabet

and is fairly quick and easy to learn


compared to other languages.
 English is not only useful-it gives you

a lot of satisfaction.
 Since English is spoken in so many

countries there are thousands of


schools around the world that offer
programmes in English
Because it is FUN!
Reading
 Isthe process of looking
at a series of written
symbols and getting
meaning from them.
Reading
 When we read, we use our
eyes to receive written
symbols and we use our brain
to convert them into words,
sentences and paragraphs
that communicate something
to us.
Reading
-can be silent or
- aloud
Reading
- Is a receptive skill –
through it we receive
information.
Reading
-the complex process of reading also
requires the skill of speaking, so that
we can pronounce the words that we
read. In this sense, reading is also a
productive skills in that we are both
receiving information and
transmitting it (even if only to
ourselves).
What is Academic Reading?
 asking questions
 reflecting on relationships among

parts of the text


 interpreting meaning
 making connections with

other readings.
