The Early Development

of The Child – The

Sensitive Periods
‘The Absorbent Mind’
(sensitive periods between
and 6 years of age)
 especially between the ages of 0-6 are
influenced a great deal by the environment
which surrounds them and used an array of
wonderful analogies to describe this crucial
time of development. The child’s
development to that of a building site, where
the child’s mind is the site and yet to be built.
Thedifference between
Critical periods and
Sensitive periods
 Theorists who believe in critical
periods believe that children who do
not get special stimulation during their
window of receptivity are going to be
"stuck" forever and never gain the
abilities they should have gained in
that period
 Theorists believe that those very
sensitive times in a child's life are just
sensitive periods. They agree that
children who do not get the right
nurturing at the right times to jumpstart
their developmental potential are going
to have problems later in life, but they
do not think that this inability to develop
is permanent.
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES FOR
BABY

During the first year of life, your baby will grow and
develop at an amazing speed.

Her weight will double by 5 to 6 months, and triple by

her first birthday. And she is constantly learning.

Major achievements called developmental milestones

include rolling over, sitting up, standing and possibly
walking. And your heart will likely melt at the sound of
her first “mama” or “dada.”

Digital Nerves

Gratification of the brain
The emotional part of our brain
responds positively to
Instant Gratification
When given the choice of
cake now or broccoli later,
this part of your brain
pushes you to choose the
cake.
Emotional brain and
Logical brain
 The logical part of your brain, though, tries to reason
with you. It might tell you that the broccoli is better for
your long-term health, and that you really don't need to
eat that chocolate cake. The emotion and logic-based
parts of your brain are constantly in a battle, trying to
show you why you should choose one option and not the
other.

 When people get really close to obtaining a reward, their

emotional brain takes over.
How to calm your brain and make the right
choices
 1. Manage your environment
 2. Tend to basic needs.

 3. Tie emotion to your goals

 4. Just do it.
