MANUFACTURING
CHAIRMAN
PROCESS PLANNING (PP)
 it acts as a bridge between design and manufacturing by translating
design specifications into manufacturing process details
 in manufacturing the goal is to produce components that meet
design specifications
 it is a production organization activity that transforms a product
design into a set of instruction (sequence , machine tool setup etc) to
manufacture machined part economically and competitively.
 the information provided in design includes dimensional
specification ( geometric shape and its features ) and technical
specification (tolerance , surface finish )
• Design specification
• Determining machine conditions (cutting
• Analysis of part
speed , feed , and depth of cut and
requirements
manufacturing times (lead time and
processing times ) • Selection of raw workpiece

Process planner Implementation

required
• Selection of tools , work holding devices
product
(fixtures) and inspection equipment • Determining
manufacturing operation
and their sequence
• Selection of machine tools
Approaches to process planning
• Manual experience-based process planning
• Computer aided process planning method
Manual experience-based process planning

• It is time consuming and over a period of time, plan developed are

not consistent.
Computer aided process planning
• Helps determine the processing steps required to make a product
after CAP has been used to define what is to be made
• CAPP systems develop a process plan or route sheet by following
either a variant or generative approach
