What Is Bullying?
» An easy way to remember what bullying means is by using
the acronym RIP:

Repeated – This means it happens over and over again, NOT

just one time.
Imbalance of Power – This means someone who is bigger,
stronger, and/or more popular than
another person is using the imbalance
of power to bully. It can include telling
them to do something and even if the
person does not want to do it, they do
not have the courage or confidence to
say no.
On Purpose – This means it happens on purpose. It does not
happen by mistake, but instead it is done
intentionally.

Physical: This one’s easy to recognize. This is

when someone pushes, shoves, hits, kicks, bites,
or otherwise hurts another kid’s body. It can also
include taking or damaging someone else’s
things.

Verbal: It’s really common because it is quick,

direct, and easy to do. Examples include teasing,
name calling, threats, mean jokes, rumors,
gossip, and saying things about someone that
aren’t true.

Emotional: This type of bullying isn’t always

obvious, but it can hurt a lot. It hurts people on
the inside and makes them feel bad about
themselves. Examples include leaving someone
out on purpose, telling lies about someone, and
embarrassing somebody publicly.

Cyberbullying: Using technology is the newest

way to bully. Examples include sending mean
text messages, posting videos, stories, or photos
that make fun of someone, and spreading rumors
online.

Why Does Bullying Prevention Matter?

More than one of every five students

reports being bullied. They are
scared to go to school. That means
those students lose the opportunity to
learn. It is every student’s right to be
safe in school.

Why Does Bullying Prevention Matter?

Students who are bullied may also have lower

self-esteem and less self-confidence. They might
also struggle to concentrate in school because
they’re afraid of being bullied.

It’s not just the targets of bullying who are hurt by

it. Students who bully sometimes have problems
with the law when they’re older. Students who
see bullying happen often feel afraid or angry and
even though they want to help, they don’t know
how.

SAFETY RULES IN BULLYING PREVENTION
1.Know What’s Up
-this means you are aware of what bullying is in
®
your environment and who you are talking to,
online and offline
2. Spot Red Flags
- means you STOP and use your awareness to
determine if someone’s behavior or social
interaction online or offline is bullying or unsafe
Some Red Flags you should be aware of:
– A student or group of students picking on someone else.
– A student who doesn’t have any friends.
– A student who sits alone.
– A student who never has a partner.
– A student who is always made fun of
– Texting or typing on social media about someone in a hurtful
way.
3. Make a Move
- this rule involves making a good decision when you see a
Red Flag and getting away from an unsafe situation, or
staying away from those who are making a poor decision.

4. Talk It Up
- with this rule, you can use an assertive voice to say NO to
Red Flags
AGAINST BULLYING ® - you can also be an Upstander, who is someone who sees
the bullying occur, stands up to the bully, and helps the
person being bullied
- You can also be an Upstander by getting help from a Safe
Adult

5. No Blame | No Shame
- this rule says that if you are ever hurt or bullied, you are
never to blame and you should never be ashamed to tell a
Safe Adult.

•Know that you do not deserve what is happening

•Know your rights: most states have laws against bullying.

• It is important to remember that telling isn’t snitching. Telling

a
Safe Adult will not only help you, but will also help the person
who is hurting you and it may also prevent them from hurting
others in the future.

Telling vs. Tattling

A lot of kids say that they don’t want to tell an adult about bullying because
they don’t want to be called a tattle-tale. But there’s a big difference between
“telling” and “tattling.”

Telling Tattling
done to protect yourself done to get someone
or another student from in trouble.
getting hurt.

It’s okay to tell an adult when you see bullying.

In fact, it’s a really smart thing to do!

Who Else is Involved?
•Then there is the group who sees the bullying.
(UPSTANDERS and BYSTANDERS)
AGAINST BULLYING ®
•There are some who look, then walk away; there are others
who watch and say nothing; and then there are those who
cheer it on. (BYSTANDERS)
•How they respond can really change the situation.

Upstanders can also do the following to help the person being

bullied:
– Change the subject
– Start a new conversation
– Invite other people to walk away from the bully, including the
student being bullied
– Tell them objectively with your Assertive Voice that their
behavior
is bullying and say STOP
– Tell a Safe Adult you trust about the bully’s behavior so they
can
help him/her
– Model/show the bully positive skills about how to be a friend
- Reach out!

There’s More

And to add to it all, the role that any student plays in a bullying
situation can change. Somebody who was bullied one day might
make fun of a younger kid the next day. The kid who laughed with
other kids at a
fight yesterday might ask the new kid with no friends to sit with him
at lunch today.

That’s why it’s important to not label another kids as a “bully”.

When someone is labeled with a name, everyone starts to think of
them in that way.

Bullying is about behavior, and behavior can change.

Students Who Bully – What Can They Do?

If you sometimes bully others, here are some things you

AGAINST BULLYING ®
can do:

1.Understand that your actions are hurting someone.

Acknowledge that you might have hurt someone.
Apologize to the person, because we all make
mistakes. If you own the mistake, you can move on
faster.
2. Stop the bullying behavior immediately. People will
see a new side of you. Make a plan to change your
behavior with the help of a Safe Adult or Safe
Friend.
3. Realize that everyone deserves respect, that
differences are a part of our world.
4. Engage in new behaviors and start to create
positive,
healthy relationships.

Seriously?
There was a time when bullying was actually seen as
acceptable behavior. People used to say things like:

•“Boys will be boys.”

Truth: Hurting others is never okay.
•“Girls don’t bully.”
Truth: Girls do bully, usually with words.
•“Words will never hurt you.”
Truth: Words may not leave bruises or broken bones, but
they can leave scars on the inside.
•“Bullying is a natural part of childhood.”
Truth: There is nothing natural about being bullied.

•“Some people deserve to be bullied.”
Truth: No one deserves to be hurt or harmed. Everyone
deserves to be treated with respect.
•“Bullying will make students tougher.”

bullying
