Introduction

Chemistry has evolved to such an extent that it

is used in almost every field of our life and
sports is no exception. Nowadays, equipment
made from advanced methods and techniques
are much more durable and effective and their
quality is top notch.
Role of chemistry in sports

• When the legendary sportsman Lance Armstrong

won a record-setting sixth victory in the strenuous
Tour deFrance bicycle race in 2004, despite his
exceptional talent, he didn’t achieve this all on his
own?
• Chemistry was his secret helper. The bicycle he
rode was a hi-performance one custom designed to
be lightweight yet capable of providing the
necessary stiffness and strength for negotiating the
21 zigzagging switchbacks of the Alpe d’Huez
stage of the race.
Role of chemistry in different sports
industries

• Chemistry plays an important role in

every known sport.
• Now, we shall study a few of them
Role Of Chemistry In
Badminton
• Heavy wooden rackets are a thing of
the past. These are now made out of
carbon fiber composites and are
lighter, sturdier and more resistant to
cracking. The wooden sticks of old
are replaced by sticks made of light
weight aluminum with titanium
inserts.
Role Of Chemistry In
Badminton
• Vectran is a manufactured fiber, spun from a
liquid crystal polymer (LCP). It is aromatic
polyester produced by the polycondensation of 4-
hydroxybenzoic acid and 6-hydroxynaphthalene-
2-carboxylic acid. Vectran fiber is used in
manufacturing badminton strings such as Yonex
BG-85 and BG-80.
Role of chemistry in Archery

• Archery is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows

with the use of a bow.
Role of chemistry in Archery

• Cyanoacrylate is the generic name for a family of fast-

acting adhesives with industrial, medical and household
uses. Cyanoacrylate is used in archery to glue fletching to
arrow shafts.
Role of chemistry in Soccer

• Where once footballs were made from stitched-together panels of leather.

• Modern footballs are carefully designed using modern polymer technology.
They’re lighter, don’t soak up water and unlike stitched balls are perfectly
round.
Role of chemistry in Soccer

• Rather than being stitched, the pieces are thermally bonded

together. Underneath the waterproof polyurethane surface is
a layer of foam. Ideal material for the bladder in a ball as it
helps keep the air inside.
Role of chemistry in sport’s
clothing
• Sports clothing has come a long way from the cotton vest
and shorts. A whole array of technical fabrics is now
available, designed to enhance performance, increase
comfort and protect the athlete.
• One of the most familiar and important fibers used in sports
clothing is Lycra, or elastane.
• Lycra and elastane are both polyurethane fibres.
Role of chemistry in sport’s
clothing
• Polyurethane

• It is now used in a wide range of sports clothing,

from swimming costumes to cycling kit where a
close fit is required.
Role of chemistry in Sports
Drink
• Manufacturers claim that drinks are
designed to ‘boost’ performance and
increase stamina.
• Many health experts believe that it is the
sugar and caffeine content that are
responsible for this
• Caffeine is a stimulant and it is believed to
work by blocking adenosine receptors in
the brain and other organs.
Role of chemistry in Sports Drink

• Many energy drinks also contain taurine, which

helps regulate heartbeat, muscle contractions and
energy levels.
