The Mole Concept

1 DOZEN
THE MOLE
• Moles is a Latin word meaning “ a mass”.
• Chemists need a useful unit to predict the potential yield
when treating an ore and to measure the amounts of
reactants and products in the Lab and Industry.
• The mole is a convenient unit that can be converted to
grams, number of particles or in case of a gas to volume.
A MOLE OF A COMPOUND
1. 1 mole O2 contains 6.023× 10²³ oxygen molecules
= 12.044× 10²³ oxygen atoms.

2. A mole of NaCl contains 6.023× 10²³ formula units of NaCl with a mass of 58.44 .
• A dozen of eggs is a pack of 12 eggs.
• Similarly a mole of Gold is the quantity that
contains 6.023× 10²³ gold atoms = a mass of
197.0 grams.

• A mole of sodium = 6.023× 10²³ sodium

atoms
•= a mass of 22.99 grams.

• A mole of iron = 6.023× 10²³ iron atoms

•= mass of 55.85 grams.
DEFINE A MOLE

A mole of a substance is that quantity which contains as many

elementary units( atoms, molecules or formula units) as there
are atoms in exactly 12 grams of c-12 isotope.
CALCULATING NUMBER OF MOLES
SOME CALCULATIONS
•Q-  How many moles are present in 3.7× 10²³ molecules of Ammonia ?
6.022× 10²³ molecules contained in 1 mole of NH3 .
So 1 molecule contained in 1/ 6.022× 10²³ moles of NH3 .
So 3.7 × 10²³ molecules contained in × 3.7 × 10²³
= 0.614 moles of ammonia.
