MITOCHONDRIA

INTRODUCTION
 Where the mitochondria is present?
 Is it present in both plant and animal cell?
 Is it present in both eukaryotic and
prokaryotic cell?
CONTENTS

 Location of mitochondria

 Size and shape of Mitochondria

 Structure of mitochondria

 Function of mitochondria

LOCATION OF MITOCHONDRIA

 Present in all eukaryotic cells

 Depends on the metabolic activity of
cell
 It may have hundreds or thousands of
mitochondria
SHAPE AND SIZE OF
MITOCHONDRIA
 Cylindrical or rod shaped structures

 Length ranges from 2 to 5 micrometer

 0.5 to 1.0 micrometer in diameter

STRUCTURE OF
MITOCHONDRIA
 Enclosed by double membrane

 Outer membrane

 Inner membrane

 Outer membrane is smooth and like a sieve

 Porins are special protein embedded into this

membrane
STRUCTURE OF
MITOCHONDRIA
STRUCTURE OF
MITOCHONDRIA
 Responsible for transport of molecules

 Inner membrane is selectively permeable and folded

inwards

 Folds are called cristae which increase surface area

 Granular structure called F1 particles are present in the

inner surface of cristae

STRUCTURE OF
MITOCHONDRIA
 F1 particles are actually Enzymes

 Inner membrane divides mitochondria into two

compartments namely:

 Inter membranal space

 Mitochondrial matrix
STRUCTURE OF
MITOCHONDRIA
 Mitochondrial matrix contains:

Small Circular DNA

All kinds of RNA

Ribosomes 70S

Enzymes
FUNCTIONS OF MITOCHONDRIA

 Powerhouse of the Cell

 Sites of Cellular Respiration

 Function in ATP generation through ETC

 Self replicating organelle
