ILLUMINATION

ENGINEERING DESIGN
Principle of Photometry
Two Sources of Light

1. Natural - Sunlight

2. Artificial – Lamps, Candle lights

and others
ARTIFICIAL LIGHT
-raising a solid body or vapour to
incandescence by applying heat to it.

Radiant Efficiency – ratio of energy

radiated out in the form of light over
the total energy radiated out by the
hot body
   SPEED and WAVELENGTH

C = 3X m/s
*though they travel at constant velocity, their
wavelengths are different.

wavelength of red = 0.000078 cm.

wavelength of violet = 0.000039 cm

A.U. -----CM
Luminous Flux – light energy radiated out per
second from the luminous body in the form
of light waves.

Illumination – measure on how luminous flux

falls on a surface
- light of proper color, quantity and
so directed as to allow quick and accurate
vision without discomfort to eyes

Luminous Intensity – luminous flux radiated

out per unit solid angle in that direction
Luminous Efficacy – is the ratio of the luminous
flux radiated over the rated power output of
the lamp

Mean Spherical Candle Power – luminous flux

Mean Hemispherical Candle Power – luminous flux
