DATE RAPE DRUGS

TAKE CARE BE AWARE

What are date rape drugs?

Date rape drug refers to a drug that can be used to

assist in the commission of a sexual assault, such as
date rape. Drugs used to facilitate rape may have
sedative, hypnotic, dissociative, and/or amnesiac
effects, and can be added to a food or drink without
the victim's knowledge.
The act of adding such substances to drinks is known
as "drink spiking". The reasons for drink spiking
range from personal amusement or maliciousness to
theft or (sexual) assault
Types of drugs

Alcohol
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB)
benzodiazepines (such as flunitrazepam, also known
as Rohypnol or "roofies")
GHB is Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate. It was rejected
by the FDA as a possible anaesthetic because the
side effects are so dangerous.
Rohypnol

Rohypnol is the trade name for flunitrazepam. It’s

meant to be used to treat severe sleep disorders
and inpatient psychiatric cases.
Street names:
Roofies, Rope, Forget pill, Mexican valium, Rib,
Roachies, Wolfies and many variations
of Ropies, Ruffles, etc
Benzodiazepines are drugs used to treat anxiety, panic attacks,
insomnia, and several other conditions. Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) is
popularly held to be a date rape drug although very little evidence exists
for its use for this purpose in the UK.
"Rohypnol can incapacitate victims and prevent them from resisting
sexual assault. It can produce "anterograde amnesia," which means
that individuals may not remember events they experienced while under
the effects of the drug. The sedative effects of Rohypnol begin to appear
approximately 30 to 45 minutes after the drug is ingested. The effects
typically last from four to eight hours after administration of the drug,
but some cases have been reported in which the effects were experienced
for twelve or more hours after administration. Scientists can now detect
flunitrazepam and related compounds in urine up to at least five days or
in hair up to a month after administration of a single dose of Rohypnol
How do people take the drugs?

GHB is colorless, odorless and tasteless and is

easily slipped into beverages at parties or in bars.
Roofies come in pill form and are thought by
many to be a safe way to increase the effects of
alcohol or drugs. They’re wrong.
Why are these drugs dangerous?

 Rohypnol reduces inhibitions when combined with small

amounts of alcohol, making it an attractive date rape drug.
Users often act in violent or destructive ways because of
lowered inhibitions.
 GHB can cause extreme vomiting, seizures and induce
coma, respiratory arrest and death. The side effects of GHB
are intensified when used with other drugs or alcohol.
 And, oh yes, drug dealers see it as a good gateway drug to
introduce users to more serious stuff.
Things you can do to protect yourself.

Never accept a drink from anyone you don’t know

well and trust.
Watch your glass.
Watch out for your friends and ask them to watch
out for you.
Only take drinks at a bar or club that were given by
the bartender.
Don’t think Roofies are safe and will only make your
high more fun.
Indications of a Sexual Assault

or no recollection of a sexual assault. The following are some indications
that a drug-facilitated sexual assault may have occurred:
• Physical Indications
Soreness in the genital or anal areas
Marks or bruises on the skin
Abnormal discharge and/or bleeding

• Other Indications
Loss of memory for a whole part of an evening or day
Waking up in different surroundings and not knowing how you got there
Waking up with clothes missing or put on differently
A sense that something wrong happened or that something is “not right”
