# Traditional definition :
Diplomacy is a closed affair between two states ;
concerned about building up allies and maintaining bilateral relations.

# Modern Definition :
Diplomacy is an open affair between states, state and non
state actors; Art of negotiation; Conflict management ; Maintainence of
multilateral relations.
# Oxford Dictionary Definition :
The management of international relations by negotiations;
the method by which these relations are adjusted and managed by ambassadors and
evoys; the business or art of the diplomatist.

# According to Chamber’s Twentith Century Dictionary, “ Diplomacy is the art


of negotiation between states particularly in securing treaties including the methods
and forms usually employed.”

# Chanakya an Indian Scholar stated that Diplomacy is the art to maintain foreign
relations guided by Sam, Daam, Danda, Bhed.
# Panikkar an Indian Diplomat has stated that “ Diplomacy is the art of forwarding
ones interest in relation to other countries. In this art of Diplomacy How to yield as
little and gain as much as possible in the interest of his country, diplomacy involves
a pitting of wits against each other.”

# Quincy Wright explains at two levels : In the popular sense it means the tact,
Shrewdness, Skill & intelligence with which it negotiations are carried out.
In the specific sense it means, The art of
negotiations in order to achieve the maximum of group objectives with minimum of
costs within a system of politics in which war is a possibility.
# Frankel defines diplomacy as the business of communicating between
governments.

# Sir Ernest Satow defines “ Diplomacy is the application of intelligence


and tact to the conduct of official relations between the governments of
independent states. ”
Conclusion
• Hence Diplomacy in general sense is art of dealing with people in
sensitive way and in specific sense it is an art or skill of managing
international relations; art of negotiation and communication between the
political entities and the medium through which we can achieve our
national interest with the help of foreign policies.
