Seismic Calculations

We have seen that there are many requirements for calculating of seismic effects
on building by international building code (IBC) and American Society of Civil
Engineering (ASCE).

In this lesson we will consider and calculate the those effects in our project.
Seismic Calculations
Seismic calculations steps:

Step#1: Determine the effective weight

Steps#2: Calculation of base shear

Step#3: Calculation of vertical distribution factor

Step#4: Determination of seismic forces at each story level

Seismic Calculations
To calculate the seismic forces at joint of any frame you need to follow the
following steps:

Step#1:
Calculate the effective weight of each story and total effective weight of the
building .

Weff = W1+W2+W3+………+Wn
The effective weight of each story is the combination of full dead load plus a
percentage of live load
Seismic Calculations
The full dead load is the load of slabs, beams, columns and walls

The live load percentage is considered as follow:

• 20% total live load for residential buildings
• 40% total live load for commercial buildings
• 60% total live load for storage buildings
• 100% total live load for reservoirs

Step#2:
Base Shear: Base shear is the total horizontal building reaction to seismic forces.

Where:
V is he base shear
Cs is seismic coefficient
Weff is the total effective weight of the building
Continue…
Step#3:
In this step you should calculate the vertical distribution factor as follow:

Where:
Wx = Wi and hx = hi are the weight of each story and height each story
Continue….
•
Step#4:
In this step we have to calculate the seismic forces at story level of the building by
using of the following equation:

Where:
Fi is the seismic force at each story level of the building
Cvx is the vertical distribution
V is the building base shear
