What is Printing?
 The word of “Printing” has derived from a Latin
word which means “pressing “. It implies a process
that uses pressure. Textile printing is one kind of
localized dyeing where dyes or pigments &
chemical applied by any method which can produce
a particular effect of color on fabric according to
design. In a word, Applying colored patterns and
designs to decorate a finished fabric is
called ‘Printing’.

METHODS OF PRINTING
 There are Five main methods of Printing a Fabric.

1) Block Printing

2) Roller Printing

3) Screen Printing

4) Heat Transfer Printing

5) Ink-Jet Printing
BLOCK PRINTING

 Block printing is a method of printing textiles

by stamping ink-dipped blocks usually made
from wood. This technique is one of the
simplest ways to create custom fabric at
home.
 For Natural Dyes, use natural fabrics such as

cotton, silk. For synthetic dyes you can use

any fabrics. Wool is not an ideal fabric for
printing on as it does not produce a crisp
outline.
ROLLER PRINTING

Roller printing, also called cylinder printing

method of applying a coloured pattern to
cloth, invented by Thomas Bell of Scotland in
1783.
 A separate dye paste for each colour is

applied to the fabric from a metal roller that

is intaglio engraved according to the design.
ROLLER PRINTING
SCREEN PRINTING
 Screen printing is a
printing technique
where a mesh is
used to transfer ink
onto a substrate,
except in areas
made impermeable
to the ink by a
blocking stencil.
HEAT TRANSFER PRINTING
Heat-transfer is a two step process of
printing on fabrics. The design is transferred
from the paper to the fabric using heat and
pressure.
 First, the art work is printed with special ink

on wax paper.
 Second, the design is transferred to the

fabric by using heat along with a heat press;

similar to an iron.
HEAT TRANSFER PRINTING
INK-JET PRINTING
 Inkjet printing is a type of computer printing
that recreates a digital image by propelling
droplets of ink onto paper and plastic
substrates.
 Inkjet printers are the most commonly used

type of printer, and range from small

inexpensive consumer models to expensive
professional machines.
 It used to printing signs and billboards, and

even T-shirts.
