Light & Light

Sources
What is light??
• Light is a form of energy, called electromagnetic
radiation.

• Light energy travels in waves just like sound energy.

• These light waves travel in straight lines away from the

source of light.

• The waves go in all directions

What are Light Sources???
• A light source is anything that produces light.

• Light can come from many different sources.

• Our greatest source of light is the sun.

• The suns, light waves travel through empty space to

reach the Earth.
What are artificial Light
Sources??
• There are many artificial light sources. ‘ Artificial’ means
an invention that has been made by humans to control or
use the light energy.

• Lamps, matches and candles are all examples of artificial

light sources.
What are Luminous and Non-
luminous objects???
• Objects that emit light on their own are called luminous
objects. Best examples of luminous objects are
the sun, stars, light bulb etc.

• Objects that do not reflect light are known as non luminous

objects. Examples of non luminous objects are wood,
plastics, metals etc.
How does high Visibility clothes
Work??
• High visibility clothes work in two ways.

• It is usually made from a combination of fluorescent

material and retro-reflective strips that reflect light very
well.

• The grey-looking retro- reflective strips send the light back

in the direction it has come from. So they provide excellent
visibility at night.
• For example the light from a car’s headlights will be
reflected from the strips straight back to the
driver.
How do we see Objects???
• We see objects when light from a source falls on them and
scatters in all directions. If some of this light enters our
eyes, we can see the object.

• We can only see when light passes through the black pupil,
in the Centre of the eye, and the lens in the eye.
• The light forms an upside-down picture of the object we
are looking on the retina, at the back of the eye.

• Light-sensitive nerve cells in the retina send signals

through the optic nerve to the brain.

• That’s how we see objects.

Is Moon a Light Source????
• Moon is not a light source, as it does not produce its
own light.

• The moon reflects, light from the sun.

Lesson:2
• Shadows occur or form when an object blocks light from
a light source.

• These objects can be opaque, Translucent or

Transparent.
What are Transparent materials??
What are Translucent materials??
What are opaque materials??
• Shadows can look different to the objects that make
them. Shadows can be a different shape.

• Shadows have no details ( eye, mouth ,color). They are

always dark.

• Shadows are shortest at midday and longest at the

beginning and at the end of the day.
Think about it !!!!!
Shadows through out the day
• Early morning: The sun is low in the sky and casts a long
shadow.
Midday: The sun is above and casts a short shadow.
• Evening: The sun is low in the sky and casts a long shadow.
Did you know that…………………….
Let’s have some fun with shadow puppets…..
