Frye said that there are


five categories of fiction
based on hero’s power
of action.

1. Myth
It is a story mode where the hero is divine.

It is superior in “kind” to other people


and to the environment of other people.
It is a traditional story especially
concerning the early history of
people or explaining natural
phenomenon.

2. Romance
It is a story mode where the hero has
marvelous actions.

The hero is identified as a human being


with an ability superior in “degree” to
other people and to his environment.
It means romantic stories with
chivalrous feats of heroes and
knights.

3. High Mimetic
It is a story mode where the hero is a leader
with an ability superior in degree to other people
but not to his environment.

The hero has authority, passions and powers of


expression far greater than others but what he does is
subject to both social criticism and the order of nature.

4. Low Mimetic
It is a story mode where the hero is one of us.

It has an ability that is superior “neither”


to other people nor the environment.

It is a story mode where the hero has an ability
or intelligence “inferior” to ours.

It is often has a sense of looking down on a


scene of bondage, frustration or absurdity.

• They are to whom the events


in the story happens.
• They are the people in the
story that guide you through
the plot and setting as you
explore the other elements.

It is usually serves a certain purpose to


move a plot, but is not as developed and
explored as a major character.

It is easily recognized by the “emotional


eye”. It is usually constructed around a
single idea or quality.

4. Round Character :

It has the capacity to surprise the readers in


a convincing and even inevitable way.
They are richer, deeper, more complicated,
more mysterious and more unpredictable.
