Plant Layout
• Introduction

Plant layout is deciding on the best physical arrangement of all


resources that consume space within a facility. These
resources might include a desk, a work center, a cabinet, a
person, an entire office, or even a department.

• Definition
“The disposition of the various parts of a plant along with all
the equipment used there in, is known as the plant layout,
which should be designed to enable the plant to function
most effectively.”

Process or functional layout
• process layout is a design for the floor plan of a plant which
aims to improve efficiency by arranging equipment according to
its function.

• Advantages of process layout


1. Provide visual control of activities
2. Use space efficiently
3. Use labour efficiently
4. Eliminate bottlenecks
5. Facilitate communication and interaction between workers and
supervisors
Product or line layout
•  product layout refers to a production system where the work
stations and equipment are located along the line of
production, as with assembly lines.
• Usually, work units are moved along a line (not necessarily
a geometric line, but a set of interconnected work stations) by
a conveyor. Work is done in small amounts at each of the
work stations on the line. To use the product layout, the total
work to be performed must be dividable into small tasks that
can be assigned to each of the workstations.
• Advantages of product layouts include:
• Output. Product layouts can generate a large volume of
products in a short time.
• Utilization. There is a high degree of labor and equipment
utilization.
• Cost. Unit cost is low as a result of the high volume. Labor
specialization results in reduced training time and cost. A wider
span of supervision also reduces labor costs. Accounting,
purchasing, and inventory control are routine. Because routing
is fixed, less attention is required.
• Disadvantages of product layouts include:
• Motivation. The system's inherent division of labor can result in
dull, repetitive jobs that can prove to be quite stressful. Also,
assembly-line layouts make it very hard to administer individual
incentive plans.
• Flexibility. Product layouts are inflexible and cannot easily
respond to required system changes—especially changes in
product or process design.
• System protection. The system is at risk from equipment
breakdown, absenteeism, and downtime due to preventive
maintenance.
Project or fixed position layout
• fixed-position layout is appropriate for a product that is too
Large or too heavy to move.

Due to the nature of the product, the user has little choice in the use of a fixed-
position layout. Disadvantages include:
• Space For many fixed-position layouts, the work area may be crowded so that
little storage space is available. This also can cause material handling
problems.
• Administration Oftentimes, the administrative burden is higher for fixed-
position layouts. The span of control can be narrow, and coordination difficult.

 Loan Department/Foreign Exchange/New Accounts:

  Advantages
 All departments are divided separately so that representative
can have efficient communication with the customers and
personal service could be provided.
 Dividing departments all ensures the privacy of customer.
 To ensure the degree of privacy this room has been left small so
that “one to one “basis service can be provided.
 All data related to concern department is stored in its
department so all departments can be well organized. 
 Manager’s office:

 Square feet: 12’ 9”

 Purpose:
 As it is located in the middle of the building it become more easy
for manager to keep eye on all the area of the bank.

 Advantages:
 Less chance of errors in the bank.

 
 Queue area:

 Square feet: 10’5” 

 Purpose:

 To have secure cash transaction.

 Advantages:

 Privacy of the transaction can be maintained as location of the


department is inside the bank.

 Only customer who comes for transaction will enter this area
so there will be less rush and queue can be maintained.
 Back office:

 Square feet: 4’7”

 Advantages:
 All administrative works are done by back office and needs
more space to store employee records and transaction detail;
it is next to store room.
 
 Teller room:

 Square feet: 7’25”

 Advantages:
 Teller room handle all the cash and account related
transaction, where the mistakes are not allowed and so it
should be away from noisy area.
 This area needs most security of all the departments, so that
person has to pass most doors to reach this area.
 All the transaction related documents are stored in store
room so they are near to store room.
 As now a day’s no bank keeps cash in the bank building, but
are store at the central branch, teller has a wide space to
receive a cash box to handle big amounts daily.
 Cost benefit analysis:
 Less maintenance cost

 Less space required

 Higher security in least cost

 In this lay out less camera required

 Every department would not required noise proof system.
