Digestion and Absorption of Carbohydrates
DIGESTION is the biomedical process by which food molecules, through hydrolysis, are broken down into simpler chemical units
that can be used by cells for their metabolic needs.

1. MOUTH
Salivary a-amylase begins digestion of starch (plants) and glycogen (meats).
2. STOMACH
(gastric juice__NO EFFECT on digestion)
3. SMALL INTESTINE
(primary site of carbohydrate digestion)
Pancreatic amylase completes starch digestion
4. END PRODUCTS of CARBOHYDRATE DIGESTION
a. occurs on the outer membranes of INTESTINAL MUCOSAL
CELLS
b. INTESTINAL LINING (Villi) by
-Active Transport
-Passive Transport

maltose converts to 2 glucose units


sucrose converts to 1 glucose and 1 fructose unit
lactose converts to 1 glucose and 1 galactose unit
