Lahore Arts Council


-Alhamra-
HISTORY
Khawaja Nazimuddin, the Governor-General of Pakistan inaugurated a Private Society
with the name of ‘Pakistan Arts Council’ on December 10, 1949.

The Government of Punjab took The Lahore Arts Council was working
control as Lahore Arts Council in 1983. till 2000 as divisional Arts Council under
(Commonly known as ALHAMRA) the Punjab Council of the Arts Act 1975

IN 2000, The Lahore Arts Council was granted autonomy by the Government of Punjab & now
managed by a separate “Board of Governors”.
Alhamra is a prestigious organization which has been promoting art, literature, drama, music &
culture for several decades. During last twenty (20) years Alhamra has emerged as hub of all
cultural activities. It has not only revived some of the dying arts but also added international
dimensions. Alhamra is devoted to preserving and developing the arts & culture being the
custodian of cultural values.
Vision
Alhamra strives to bring a certain quality to its events and maintain
standards that provide quality entertainment to public. Working as a
significant base that helps us better to understand the needs of artists,
the sector and those who attend and participate in the performing
arts. Our approach in developing is to build upon what has already
been achieved but also to identify what needs to be done locally and
internationally.

Objectives
 Develop and maintain facilities for all forms of art including Performing Arts.

 Provide facilities for art education and organize workshops, seminars, classes

private/collaborative sponsorship.

 Organize art & cultural fairs, festivals and other programs, cultural ensembles
and exhibitions etc., within country and abroad on its own or in collaboration
with local and foreign bodies.

 Award fellowship, scholarship, certificates, degrees, diplomas, medal, grants,
prizes, gifts, aids, loans, advance and monetary or other benefits to
individuals or groups engaged in the promotion, study or research of various
art forms.

 Print, publish, issue books, periodicals and publications relating to art &
culture.

 Establish museum of musical instruments, sculpture, archives, folk heritage,


galleries, libraries including audio-visual library.

 Implementation of Dramatic Performance Act, 1876.
