WHAT IS BIOREMEDIATION?
-Bioremediation is the process of using
biological approaches to neutralize or cure
contamination of waste.
-’bio’ means the biological organism;
‘remediation’ means remedying the
situation.
WAYS OF BIOREMEDIATION
• Microbial Bioremediation
>uses microorganisms to break down
contaminants.
• Phytoremediation
>uses plants to bind, extract , and clean
up pollutants.
• Mycoremediation
>uses fungi’s digestive enzymes to
break down contaminants.
2 TYPES OF
BIOREMEDIATION:
IN SITU
-the treatment of the contaminated water or soil
in the site in which it was found
EX SITU
-the treatment of the contaminated
water or soil once it has been
excavated or pumped out of the
location at which it was found
EXAMPLE OF IN-SITU
BIOREMEDIATION:
• Intrinsic Bioremediation
>Biostimulation
• Engineered In-Situ Bioremediation
>Bioaugmentation
>Biosparging
>Bioventing
EXAMPLE OF EX-SITU
BIOREMEDIATION:
• Landfaming
• Biopiles
• Composting
TYPES OF
CONTAMINATION
Agricultural Contamination
Municipal Contamination
Industrial Contamination
Oil-spill Contamination
Agricultural Contamination
Is generally referred to
the undesirable outcome
when factories harmful
products and waste to
the environment.
Oil-spill Contamination
is the release of liquid
petroleum hydrocarbon
into the environment,
especially to the marine
ecosystem
Process of deploying microorganism that detoxifies or
degrades environmental pollutants including petroleum industry
products.
BENEFITS:
-Safer than the old way of
cleaning.
-Less cost for the equipment and
labor since most of the work will
be done by the microorganism.
-It will not cost major disruption
of the normal activities.
-Useful for the complete of a wide
variety of a contaminants.
