HOW TO ANSWER NOVEL
QUESTION?
-SPM 2019-
S- (STATEMENT)
The novel that I studied was Captain Nobody by
Dean Pitchford. The scene that makes me
happy can be found in Chapter 15 when Newt
as Captain Nobody foiled the robbery of a
jewellery store.
(STATEMENT)
T - (TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
This nerve-wrecking scene started when Newt
noticed his friend, JJ standing in front of
Sullivan’s Jewellery Store. JJ told him that there
were spelling errors on the signs at the store
windows. She told him that she had tried telling
the owner to change the sign but they refused to
listen to her. She then asked Newt if he would
talk to the owners on her behalf. Newt was
reluctant at first, however JJ convinced him to
do it since he was Captain Nobody.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
T - (TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
Newt found the owners, Mr. and Mrs.
Sullivan standing behind a counter top and
attending to only one customer. Mr.
Sullivan however asked Newt how he
could help him. Newt stammered that he
could wait or come back later and wanted
to leave. Newt than realised for some
reason Mrs. Sullivan wanted him to stay.
Newt then stepped forward and told Mr.
Sullivan about the mistakes on the signs
at the store windows.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
T - (TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
As Newt neared the counter top, he
noticed that all the merchandise was laid
out for the costumer’s approval. Newt
quickly pinpointed the spelling errors.
The costumer was getting very annoyed.
Newt finally realised that he was wedged
in a middle of a robbery. In front of him
was a jewellery thief possibly with a lethal
gun. Before the thief could make any
move, Mr. Sullivan pressed an alarm that
was hidden under the desktop.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
T - (TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
The shocked thief quickly grabbed all
the jewellery and tried to make an
escape. However he ran into Newt
and they both fell to the floor.
Although the thief managed to make
a run, he did not manage to steal the
jewellery and what was more
important was that Mr. and Mrs
Sullivan was not harmed.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE)
A - (ANALYSIS - REASONS)
This scene had undoubtedly made me happy mainly
because Newt unwittingly helped the jewellery
store. Kudos to Captain Nobody and his kind heart,
Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were both safe and the
jewellery store would have been robbed if it was not
for Newts’ random acts of kindness (R1). Next, this
scene also made me happy because Newt had
proven that he was kind, brave and helpful. These
are the characteristics that we need from a hero and
he has proven to have those qualities to in him (R2).
Therefore, these are the reasons why the scene
made me happy.
(ANALYSIS + DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYSIS)
R - (RELATE)
From my personal point of view, this
scene has not only made me happy
but also drives me to become a better
person who strives for the truth
towards a betterment of the society I
live in.

HOW TO ANSWER NOVEL
QUESTION?
-SPM 2019-
S- (STATEMENT)
The novel that I studied was Captain Nobody by
Dean Pitchford. The character that I do not like
is Newt’s mom, Mrs. Newman because she
always puts her responsibility towards her kids
as last in the list.
(STATEMENT)
T+A - (TE+ANALYSIS - REASONS)
Mrs. Newman is Newton and Chris Newman’s
mother. She is too busy with her job, making her
a bit careless on her responsibility as a mother.
This can be seen when Newt Newman had to
make breakfast for his family members even
though he is the youngest in the family. When
Newt sacrificed his time and energy to serve
breakfast in the morning, the whole family,
including his mother, took his kindness for
granted by not eating the breakfast he had
made. Mrs. Newman should have known that it
is not a 10-year-old boy’s job to make breakfast
for his family. (R1).
T+A - (TE+ANALYSIS - REASONS)
In my opinion, Mrs. Newman has shown a bad
example of a mother. A mother is someone who
cares deeply for the children and give credits to
them when they have done something good.
Furthermore, Mrs. Newman should have paid
more attention to the household chores. A good
mother should be able to attend to the chores
or delegate the chores fairly to her children, and
as parents, they must appreciate the good
deeds of their children, no matter how little.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE + ANALYSIS -
DEVELOPMENT OF REASON)
A - (ANALYSIS - REASONS)
Next, Mrs. Newman is also absent-minded as she only
remembers certain things which are important only to
her. This is shown when she was on the phone with a
neighbour, dealing with a gathering they were planning
to do in Chris’s Big Game. Newt had to remind her the
details of what to bring to the gathering including the
quantity. She also forgot where she had put the keys
when Newt told her that it was accidentally put in the
fridge. Mrs. Newman did not show much gratitude
towards her younger son even though he did so much
for her. (R1).
A - (ANALYSIS - REASONs)
In my opinion, Mrs. Newman has shown some bad
qualities of a mother. Being a mother is challenging
because a mother has to do a lot of multitasking, but it
can be rewarding too if a mother puts the appropriate
responsibility to her kids and appreciate them for what
they did. Furthermore, Mrs. Newman should not put the
important responsibility to Newt Newman to compensate
for the lack of qualities she has.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE + ANALYSIS -
DEVELOPMENT OF REASON)
A - (ANALYSIS - REASONs)
Furthermore, Mrs. Newman seems to pay less attention
and less affection towards Newton Newman. This can be
clearly seen when Chris Newman fell into a coma after his
Big Game. That was the only time when she paid full
attention to Chris, but sadly leaving Newton Newman
behind to cope with the tragedy all on his own. This has
resulted Newt to embark on the journey of Captain Nobody
by wearing the costume to school because she had
forgotten to dry them the day before school. Even worse,
Newton Newman had endangered himself on the highway
to chase a ferret, got involved in a robbery and climbed the
high Appleton Tower because he clearly lacked his parents’
supervision.
(TEXTUAL EVIDENCE + ANALYSIS - DEVELOPMENT OF
REASON)
R - (RELATE)
In a nutshell, Mrs. Newman should have
cared more for her children especially
Newton Newman. Her kids need her
attention, a home and a family to rely on.
Instead of getting emotional and careless,
a parent must be able to handle their
emotions and pay full attention to the kids
who need them all the time. As the saying
goes, ‘A family without love and care is
like a body without a living soul’.
