(Disreadi)
No. of Hours / Semester: 80 hours /
sem
Prerequisite (if needed): Grade 3-
10 Science
Course Credit: 4.4 units
Course Description:
This course focuses on the
application of scientific knowledge
and the solution of practical
problems in a physical
environment. It is designed to
bridge the gap between theoretical
science and daily living.
We want the students to learn to:

1.) be excellent communicators

by discovering the meanings of
various terms related to
disaster management and be
able to share their knowledge to
people in their respective
communities;
We want the students to learn to:

2.) be critical thinkers by

acquiring the ability to connect
their knowledge of the origin of
different hazards to factors
relating to the science and the
physical environment;
We want the students to learn to:
3.) be socially responsible
citizens by utilizing their
learning in this course to
increase the knowledge of their
fellowmen about disaster
preparedness and to engage
themselves in concrete activities
relating to disaster management;
and
We want the students to learn to:

4.) be lifelong learners by

becoming more committed
advocates of the environment
who recognize the constant
changes in the environment that
require equally constant
learning on how to adapt to
them.
At the end of the semester, students
are expected to:

• demonstrate understanding of the concepts of
disaster, risk, emergency, exposure,
vulnerability and hazard;
• identify the concepts surrounding different
natural and man-made hazards (earthquake,
volcano, geological, hydrometeorological,
fire);
• relate the concepts of the above mentioned
hazards to the effects they pose on people
and the environment;
• give examples of ways to respond to
the occurrence of various natural and
man-made hazards;
• summarize the concepts of disaster
risk reduction (DRR) and disaster risk
reduction and management (DRRM);
• compare the standards of disaster
preparedness with the existing rules
and procedures in their local
communities;
• find meaning in the policies of disaster
risk reduction and management by
looking into the implementing rules and
regulations of RA 10121;
• give examples of locally existing
projects and programs on disaster
preparedness; and
• perform with ease some first aid
techniques that can be useful during
disaster situations (simple wound care,
bandaging, CPR)
