Derived from the Greek word philos which means
lover of and Sophia which means wisdom.
the use of reason in understanding such things as
the nature of the real world and existence, the use
and limits of knowledge, and the principles of
moral judgment.

OF PROBING QUESTIONS THAT PEOPLE
COULD NOT RATIONALLY JUSTIFY
THEIR CONFIDENT CLAIMS TO
KNOWLEDGE.
SOCRATES ESTABLISHED THE FACT THAT ONE
CAN NOT RELY ON AUTHORITY FIGURES TO
HAVE SOUND KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT.
SOCRATES DEMONSTRATED THAT
PERSONS MAY HAVE POWER AND A
HIGH POSITION YET BE DEEPLY
CONFUSED AND IRRATIONAL.

•  ANALYZING BASIC CONCEPTS AND TRACING OUT IMPLICATIONS
• HIS METHOD IS NOW KNOWN AS SOCRATIC QUESTIONING and is the
BEST KNOWN CRITICAL THINKING TEACHING STRATEGY.
ABOUT HIS DEATH
 • Socrates' death was the result of his asking philosophical questions
• Socrates was ultimately sentenced to death by drinking a hemlock-
based liquid
Shortly before his final breath, Socrates described his death as a release
of the soul from the body.
What is CRITICAL THINKING
• Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and
skillfully, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating
information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience,
reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and
action.
• Critical Thinking involves asking questions to come up with potential
solutions to different problems.
