NON-AFFIXATION

Non-affixation is deverivation processes of

new word such as conversion, clipping,
backformation, acronym, abbreviation,
coinage.
In linguistics, conversion, also called zero derivation or null derivation, is a
kind of word formation involving the creation of a word (of a new word class)
from an existing word (of a different word class) without any change in form,
which is to say, derivation using only zero. For example, the noun green in
golf (referring to a putting-green) is derived ultimately from the adjective
green.

Conversions from adjectives to nouns and vice versa are both very common
and unnotable in English; much more remarked upon is the creation of a
verb by converting a noun or other word (e.g., the adjective clean becomes
the verb to clean).
Clipping is the processes whereby new words are formed by
shortening other words; i.e., by eliminating the initial part, the last
part, or both parts, of those words. E.g., phone from (tele)phone,
plane from (air)plane, ad (advert (BrE)) from ad(vertisement),
exam from exam(ination), flu from (in)flu(enza), fridge(esp. BrE)
from refrigerator.
Back-formation is the process by which new words are formed by the
deletion of asupposed affix from an already existing word (cf. Quirk et
al., 1985; Fromkin & Rodman,1983; Richards et al. 1985). It is an
example of historical reanalysis and not a productive word formation
process. For example, the verbs peddle, edit, swindle, televise, donate,
have been created form the pre-existing nouns peddler, editor, swindler,
television, donation,respectively.
An acronym is a word or name formed from the initial
components of a longer name or phrase, usually using individual
initial letters, as in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) or EU
(European Union), but sometimes using syllables, as in Benelux
(Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg), or a mixture of the two,
as in radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging). Similarly, acronyms are
sometimes pronounced as words, as in NASA or UNESCO,
sometimes as the individual letters, as in FBI or ATM, or a mixture
of the two, as in JPEG or IUPAC.
An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase,
by any method. It may consist of a group of letters, lower
case letters do count or words taken from the full version of
the word or phrase, for example, the word abbreviation can
itself be represented by the abbreviation abbr., abbrv., or
abbrev.
Word coinage (or invention) is the process whereby new
words are created outright, either deliberately or accidentally,
to fit some purpose. Usually, words are coined to express new
ideas, processes, products, etc. in the language. For example,
brand names such as Xerox, Google, Kleenex,Nylon, Dacron,
etc.; pooch, twit, nerd, muggle, etc.
