FASHION BASICS Subculture

SUBCULTURE
A subculture is a group of people within a culture that differentiates itself from
the parent culture to which it belongs, often maintaining some of its founding
principles.
Hip Hop is a music based

HIP HOP subculture that was created by

African Americans in the Bronx,
New York City.
ETYMOLOGY
The term hip hop comes from “hipi” in Wolof , a west African language. It
means to open one’s eyes and see. Hip is the knowledge, hop is the
movement.
HISTORY How it all started
HISTORY
• It began in the 1970s in Bronx, New York
City by economically suppressed African-
Americans to express their struggles.
• Originally it started with emceeing
(rapping). Other elements like
breakdancing, beat making, beat boxing
and graffiti came to limelight later on.
• As more and more people could relate to
it, it didn’t take much time for hip hop to
gain popularity.
VALUES & BELIEFS Their fundamental beliefs

hip hop music to stand up for what they
believe is right.

social justice, peace, respect, self-worth,
community, and having fun.
LIFESTYLE Their way of living
LIFESTYLE
• A distinguish behavior that this subculture
has is the way they speak. They make
sentences shorter by using slangs (aight,
dawg, etc.).
• They often participate in the events where
hip hoppers are involved in activities like
rap battles, beat boxing and break dancing.
• These people like to embrace music and
take in the lyrics word for word.
• They have a very recognizable style of
clothing too which is discussed later in this
presentation.
FASHION How they dress
FASHION
• Hip hop was originally represented through
baggy jeans, baggy sweats, sports gear, large
headphones, large graphic t-shirts and tank
tops.
• Large gold chain necklaces with a symbol or
word and hats such as beanies, fedora hats, and
baseball hats with hard flat bills.
• The modern hip hop fashion trends are now
slowly becoming fancier with renowned artists
that are changing the look of hip hop with fancy
suits, ties and expensive hats and shoes.

collaboration of a desi rap artist with a major label,
