What is Motivation

 Motivation is having the desire and

willingness to do something.it is
some kind of force, stimulus or
influence that moves a person

 Motivation is the call to action that

impels us to initiate behaviours

 The output of motivation could be

described as the initiation, direction,
intensity and persistence of
behaviour
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory

 Safety or security needs
 Social needs
 Esteem needs
 Need for self-actualisation
Maslow’s arguments are

 Earlier need levels must be satisfied before the next level is activated
 Once a need is substantially satisfied it no longer motivates individuals

 Theory-Y type employees are self-directed and self-controlled

 They are committed to their responsibility
 Accept their mistakes and learn from their mistakes

‘‘Theory-Y are more valid than Theory-X’’
