INTRODUCTION

• Bio concrete is a concrete which heals itself

when it comes in contact with air and water , it
produces lime on outer layer of concrete.
• Bio concrete is also known as self healing
concrete or bacterial concrete.
• It is specially made to increase the life span or
durability of concrete structure by the self
healing of the concrete.

WHAT SPECIAL PRESENT IN BIO
CONCRETE?
• There are two things present in bio
concrete.
The special bacteria to
1. Resist the alkalinity
2. Mechanical stress of concrete.
The chemical precursor.
WHAT BACTERIA IS USED?
There are various types of bacillus bacterias used in bio concrete
construction. The mostly used bacterias are given below.

B. fillaa B. cohnii

B. pasturii
MECHANISM INSIDE BIO
CONCRETE?
• product used: 1. bacillus bacteria
2.calcium nutrient ( calcium lactate)
The procedure contains several stages,
• Formation of cracks on concrete.
• Water is deliberately forced in to the cracks and precursor is
activated.
• It induces the bacteria to form lime stone.
• Then the cracks are filled .

Healing nature of bio concrete

WORKING PROCESS

• Cracks less than 2mm can be auto fill by concrete.

• But if the cracks are more than 2mm then concrete itself fail to
heal, thus opening passage to chemicals and other corroding
materials.
• In bio concrete if water is in contact with the concrete through the
cracks, the bacteria get activated from its stage of dormancy.
• Calcite acts as the healing agent.
TESTING OF BIO CONCRETE

( Fig. B)
RESULT

Strength studies:

In 2011, Henk Jonkers and his team found the above

result by testing on bio concrete.
APPLICATION
• From enhancement in durability of cementitius materials to
improvement in sand properties, from repair of limestone
monuments, sealing of concrete cracks to highly durable
bricks, microbial concrete has been successful in one and
all.
• This new technology can provide ways for low cost and
durable roads.
• High strength buildings with more bearing capacity.
• Low cost durable houses.
• Long lasting river bank.
ADVANTAGES
• Self repairing of cracks without any external aide.
• Reduction in permeability of concrete.
• Bacillus bacterias are harmless to human life and hence it
can be used effectively.
• Improvement in compressive strength of concrete.
• Reduction in corrosion of reinforced concrete.
• Microbial concrete in crack remediation.
DISADVANTAGES

• Cost of bacterial concrete is double than conventional

concrete.
• Growth of bacteria is not good in any atmosphere and
media .
• Design of mix concrete with bacteria here is not available
in any IS code or other code.
CONCLUSIONS
• Bio concrete is a project that can change the way we build
the structures today.
• Bio concrete technology has proved to be better than many
conventional technology because of its self healing ability
and eco friendly nature.
• It is marketable and profitable.
• Lastly this invention shows what the combination of
different engineering disciplines can achieve when working
together.
