Posture of foetus

Presentation
• It is relationship between longitudinal axis of mother with the longitudinal axis of
foetus. The presentation may be divided into three parts:
1. Longitudinal presentation(normal)
-anterior and posterior presentation

2. Transverse presentation(abnormal)

3. Vertical presentation(abnormal)
Longitudinal Presentation
• Longitudinal axis of dam is parallel to the longitudinal axis of vertebral
column of foetus.
Transvers presentation
• Longitudinal axis of fetus forms a right angle with the long axis of the dam in transverse plane
Vertical presentation
• Longitudinal axis of fetus forms the right angle with the long axis of dam in vertical plane
Position
• Relationship between vertebral column of fetus with the four quadrants of the maternal
pelvis(sacrum, right ilium, left ilium, and pubis)
• Dorso-sacral, dorso-pubic, right dorso-ilial etc.
Posture
• Relationship between movable appendages of foetus with its own body
Fore limb flexion:
(a) Shoulder flexion (b) Knee flexion (c) Fetlock flexion
Hind limb flexion:
(a) Hip flexion (b) Hock flexion (c) Metatarsal flexion
Flexion of head & neck:
(a) Upward deviation (b) Downward deviation (c) Lateral deviation
