Welcome everyone to Group 4’s

presentation about

Tet Holiday
First of all, as you’ve already known:
• It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the
arrival of spring based on the Lunar calendar
• This year, we’re celebrating new year 2011-
Tân Mão MY TURN!!!
With Vietnamese people,
• Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family
reunions. They visit their relatives and give
wishes. Then children are given red envelopes
with lucky money from their relatives. 
• Tet is a time to have fun, to sum up what have
been done and haven’t, to fix what have been
done wrong, to prepare for new plans…
To prepare
for Tet…
• Clean the house
• Buy new clothes to wear
and to be beautiful in Tet
holiday
• Try to pay off their debts
in advance so that they
can be debt-free on Tết
• Buy new flowers, fruits
and plants
People buy Ochna integerrima ( Hoa mai) in South
Vietnam or Cassia javanica L. ( Hoa đào) in North VN
with full of hopes of better lives.
Important days and times
• Dec 29/30, Chinese calendar: at exactly
midnight is the time changing between old
and new year, family members give
wishes to each other, give red envelopes,
drink wine or eat lucky food,, go to a
pagoda… Some prefer watching fireworks
Important days and times
• 1st day: “enter house” tradition (the first visitor
a family receives in the year determines their
fortune for the entire year). This day, people
don’t usually leave house, they have ceremony
at home or if they live far apart from their
close relatives, they visit their father (as
tradition the 1st day is “Tet for Fathers”

• 2nd day: praying at home then visit and give
wishes to mothers ( Tet for mothers)
• 3rd day: Tet for teachers
Important days and times
• Ông Công, Ông Táo (kitchen gods) day: the
three kitchen guardians for each house. who
report to the Jade Emperor about the events in
that house over the past year, return to heaven
on the 23rd day of the twelfth month by lunar
calendar. Their departure is marked by a
modest ceremony where the family offers
sacrifices for them to use on their journey.
People go to spring festival
Almost households cook Tet traditional food such as: Banh
Chung, banh Day, …

( Đường hoa Nguyễn Huệ) from 7pm 31/1/2011 to
10pm 6/2/2011
• Bánh Tét festival , from 26/1/2011 to 31/1/2011
• Fireworks, on 3/2/2011 (0h-0h15 am)
