REINFORCEMENT IN

CONCRETE
NEED FOR REINFORCEMENT
• Concrete is weak in
tension
• Reinforced with
steel to increase the
tensile capacity
• Failure of concrete
without rebar is
brittle – without any
warning
TYPES OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT

Hot Rolled Steel Bars Plain Mild Steel Rebar

Pre-stressing Strands
Properties of Reinforcing Steel
Bonding of Reinforcement and Concrete
Dia of the Reinforcing Bars
• 8 mm - 0.395 Kg / RMT
• 10 mm - 0.617 Kg /RMT
• 12 mm - 0.888 Kg / RMT
• 16 mm - 1.579 Kg / RMT
• 20 mm - 2.467 Kg / RMT
• 25 mm - 3.854 Kg / RMT
• 28 mm - 4.835 Kg / RMT
• 32 mm - 6.315 Kg / RMT
• 40mm – 9.876 Kg / RMT

CUTTING AND BENDING OF PLACING AND TIEING OF

REINFORCEMENT REINFORCEMENT
GENERAL DO’S AND DON’T’S
• Protection from natural elements to prevent
corrosion
• Strict adherence to structural drawings
• Any deviations to be intimated to engineer at
site
• Cover, shape and size of rebar, spacing, hooks,
bends and laps – as per drawing and standard
practice per code.
• Cutting of reinforcement / misplacing not
mentioned in the drawing to be strictly avoided.
IMPORTANCE OF COVER TO REBAR
• Protection from corrosion and ensuring of
durability
• Fire resistance of RCC elements
• Minimum cover as per IS 456:2000
1. Slabs and Beams: depending on exposure
conditions
2. Columns – 40mm
3. Footings – 50mm
Development Length
• Calculated as per IS 456:2000

• Development length in tension and

compression are different

• Generally expressed as function of diameter

on the structural drawing
SPLICING OF REINFORCEMENR
• Need for splicing of reinforcement
• Different types of reinforcement splicing

Lap Splices

Welded Splices Mechanical Couplers

LAP SPLICING
• Length of lap splicing shall be generally equal
to development length or as specified in the
drawing
• Lap splicing shall be staggered. Only 50% of
the bars shall be lapped at a location.
• Lapping shall be avoided locations of higher
stresses.
