Being a critical reader also involves
understanding that texts are always
developed in a certain context.
A text is neither written nor read
in a vacuum; its meaning and int
erpretation are affected by a give
n set of circumstances.
Thus, context is defined as the social, cultural,
political, historical, and other related circumstan
ces that surround the text and form the terms fr
om which it can be better understood and evalu
ated. Knowledge of the text’s context helps in a
ppreciating the text’s message more deeply.
Intertextuality
is a literary device that creates an 'i
nterrelationship between texts' and g
enerates related understanding in se
parate works.
Intertertexuality
is the shaping of a text's meaning by a
nother text. Intertextual figures include:
allusion, quotation, calque, plagiarism, t
ranslation, pastiche and parody.
Pastiche is a literary piece that imitates a fa
mous literary work by another writer.
