An instructional student-centered approach which
uses carefully constructed clinical problems as
a context for students to: define their learning
needs, conduct self-directed enquiry, integrate
theory and practice, and apply knowledge and
skills to develop a solution to a defined
problem.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a total approach to
education began at McMaster University Medical
School over 25 years ago.
Dr. Howard Barrows and Ann Kelson of Southern
Illinois University School of Medicine have defined
PBL as:
