ADVENT
• meaning "arrival" or "coming"
• is a period of spiritual preparation in which many christians make themselves ready for the
coming, or birth of the lord jesus christ.
• typically involves a season of prayer, fasting, and repentance, followed by anticipation, hope,
and joy.
• in western christianity, advent begins on the fourth sunday before christmas day or the sunday which
falls closest to november 30, and lasts through christmas eve, or december 24

CHRISTMAS

• christmas derives from the combination of christ and mass


• christmas was not celebrated by the earliest christians. the custom was to
celebrate a saint's birth into eternal life
• it took a while, though, for the church to develop the feast of christmas.
• it was first celebrated along with epiphany, on january 6
• slowly christmas was separated out into its own feast, on december 25.
many of the early church fathers regarded this as the actual date of christ's
birth,
EPIPHANY

• the term epiphany comes from a greek word meaning "appearance," "manifestation," or "revelation"
• epiphany is celebrated on january 6, marking the end of the christmas season.
• other names for epiphany day are three kings day, twelfth day, theophany, and little christmas.
• epiphany is a feast that recognizes the manifestation of god in jesus, and of the risen christ in our
world. n of god to the world through jesus christ.
LENT

• lent is the christian season of preparation before easter.


• the purpose is to set aside time for reflection on jesus christ
• during the six weeks of self-examination and reflection, christians who observe lent typically
make a commitment to fast, or to give up something
